I'm doing a lesson plan with time expressions. We did clock time, and we did time expressions. I like to do activities in my classroom that allow the students to write on the board. They get a real kick out of it, and participation is NOISY!
So, as a pot task refresher I have been writing ON-AT-IN on the board, and then prompting with expressions to find out where each fits. ie IN the morning, ON Sunday, AT night, AT Christmas, ON Christmas Day, etc.
I have some...(this isn't complete, the file is at my other school)
ON
(day of the week)
the weekend
holidays
birthday
childrens day
independance day

IN
the morning, afternoon, evening
(month)
(year)
(season)

AT
noon
midnight
night
(clock time)
Chuseok
Christmas

Can people help me populate this list?

Also, what about the rules for using each?

I have come up with a general set, like if it uses "day", it is probably ON,
Use IN for periods of time...etc.

Thanks for any help with this.

Have you seen 'Mega'? It's a conversation textbook. On page 25 of the workbook there there is this helpful hint:

Remember:
Use in with months
Use on with days and dates
Use at with times

(At Christmas (time). On Christmas day...)

I have never heard of Mega.
Thank you for posting the hint.
It doesnt really address why we say, "in the morning", or "or, "at night".
Is there a rule for seasons?
Why do we say, "On the hour", instead of, "at the hour"?
I hate getting caught out by students, so hopefully some people will post more information and hints like yours.
I like to keep the class fast paced and excited, so I am making a list of everything I can think of.
