First South Korean to Travel to Space

South Korea is set to send its first citizen into space after it agreed on Thursday to pay Russia up to $25 million to train a South Korean and blast him into orbit.
"As far as I know, there are 35 countries that have had people in space," said Paik Hong-yul, the head of space research in South Korea. "We're not one yet, but one reason we are doing this is for our national pride."
Russian space chief Anatoly Perminov and his South Korean counterpart swapped contracts, smiles and handshakes for the media at a signing ceremony in central Moscow.
They said the deal was worth $21 million to $25 million and takeoff was scheduled for 2008.
The South Korean cosmonaut, who has yet to be named, would join a mission to the international space station.
The South Korean will conduct scientific research during the space trip. |

| I think South Korea needs to take more interest in space. It's surprising none of them have ever gone up there. |

Space Kimchi Poised for 2008 Launch
Traditional Korean delicacies kimchi, gochujang (red pepper sauce) and ginseng are being made ready for their launch into space. The Ministry of Science and Technology said Sunday Korea�s first astronaut will be eating Korean space food which Dr. Kim Sung-soo of the Korea Food Research Institute is developing. The plan is for Korea�s first astronaut to take the foods into space on a journey scheduled for April 2008. According to the ministry, the Korean Food Research Institute is working together with an academy in Kazakhstan that makes food for Russian cosmonauts.
The KRI will produce and treat the food for space consumption and will test it and develop packing techniques together with the Kazakh academy. The ministry says the U.S., Russia and China provide space versions of their traditional dishes for astronauts to make sure they have something that suits their taste buds as they roam the final frontier. �If the Korean astronaut eats our traditional food in space, it will be a great opportunity to show off our nation�s culinary culture, specifically the greatness of kimchi, which is already an internationally recognized food,� Kim said.

Can you just imagine..... the smell....kimchee...in a space ship! And you can't open the windows!
It may be good for ones' health......but so are other foods who won't be making in into space. |

Of course, it also shows off that a Korean won't try the local food even when in outer space!

| Uh-oh...Now the economy will suck, just like the good ole US of A. Space programs are a waste of time and money, and I am not even sure I really believe a man ever walked on the moon. That could be a govt. scandal! I don't put anything past the US govie. |

Space exploration a waste of time and money eh? Yeah, good point. So is like, history and readin'. |

| What happened to that Korean who studies at an American university, the one who won a contest in which the top prize is a space flight in 2007, which would make him the first Korean in space? |
