So I've seen a lot of ads for teaching part time. I know you have to have permission from your visa sponsor, but are there other requirements for this, or can any E-2 with permission teach part time?

Just do it. You won't be able to get permission from your employer. I know people that have been working side jobs with E-2 visas for years.

How does making 4-5 million won a month (rent free) sound? Pretty good right?

I myself don't do it because I am lazy and I enjoy doing nothing in my free time. But my friends work like mad.

It's pretty bold to recommend someone take a job without permission, especially if it is a legitimate job with a paper trail.

Well actually I'm looking for a job now and the one I'm likely to take is going to give me permission, I just hope they're not giving me permission for something I can't do. So does anyone know? Can an E-2 work part time jobs?

Yes, an E-2 can work part-time jobs. Immigration stipulates the following conditions:
  • No more than 2 workplaces in addition to the main workplace
  • The hours and salary of an additional workplace cannot exceed the hours and salary of the main workplace

Paper trail meaning an envelope with cash in it?

I was thinking of a part-time job officially, and without consent from the org. employer and immi, it signing papers and getting deposits would be the trail.

Now cash without contract is still somewhat of a risk, but that's just a private lesson gig.

I would also love to take a part-time job in publishing, and have asked for permission to do so to be included in my contract. However, they've told me that a contract clause with permission would affect visa processing, something to do with taxes are only based on my sponsored salary? Anyone have any idea if this is true?

I hear that a lot of employers are unwilling to let people take other jobs but mostly everyone does.... why is it that whenever you try to do something legally it never works out?

I'm curious about this too. It seems that some contracts afford a lot of free time that could be used to make even more money working a second job.

Why do hagwons oppose second jobs so often?

They oppose if there is a conflict of interest or if it will take away from your performance from work. A lot of places are just arses for the sake of it. They paid all the money for visa expenses and thus don't want anyone else taking advantage of that.

It is easy enough to work "legit" jobs but get paid under the table. In fact anyone that doesn't do it is a moron, unless you are just a lazy arse like myself.

What percentage of teachers do this do you think?

Don't say anything you wouldn't want to see printed in tomorrow's Korea Herald.
