Has anyone gone to see Babel? Does it have English subtitles for the non-English parts or only Korean? I would assume that all the korean theaters have the same copy of hte film, but I oculd be wrong. Anyway, give me some info if you've seen it.

I saw it. The subtitles were all in Korean, so that would require either a knowledge of Korean, or a knowledge of Spanish, Japanese, Japanese sign language, Arabic and Berber to enjoy it.

Originally it was intended to be seen with no subtitles, and thus it had none in the States. I guess that could work there since it was intended as art-house Oscar bait, but here it has subtitles because it needs to be commercially viable.

Yes I personally regret seeing first with subtitles...

What you might want to do is go to see it in a theater with korean subtitles, think about it for a bit, and then grab a subtitled version off the internet.

So, in the states no subtitles? That would solve my problem. I saw Kill Bill in the theater here and there were no subtitles for all the Japanese parts and i was fairly confused. But if its intended for no comprehension, then I'll go see it

I guess it's supposed to show that even with no subtitles, you can comprehend quite a bite just from our common humanity.

Or something. I didn't really like it that much.

Same here. I wasn't overly impressed.
Saw it at the COEX, the subtitles were in Korean. I guess I understood about 2/5ths of it as I speak Spanish aswell as English.

I saw it in English only on an excellent quality DVD I bought in January. Go to Itaewon and get it for 5000 won.

(Or get it from someone who already has the DVD. For example, I will be posting it as well as 10 other Oscar-nominated films on the Buy&Sell forum by Monday.)

There are options other than Korean theatres. And it is not a "must-see-in-theatres" kind of show, more drama for the small screen than scenery or action or majestry for the big screen.

Might as well grab a bootleg copy for 5,000won.
The legal copies are out here in the states, so you MIGHT be able to pick up a copy that might have English subtitles...

BTW~ cool movie....

you will, with this movie... have them put it in the player first and see that it has english subtitles before you buy it, but both major DVD suppliers I know of in Itaewon have English versions of this particular film (english subtitles only where needed and no korean anywhere).

I remember picking up the newest James Bond DVD the night BEFORE its American debut and after watching it I gave it to my director to see and he later told me it was good but... no Korean, but that was okay because it was Bond, he said with a smile.

Some DVD films have bad bootleg copies, like back of the theatre with handheld cam with people walking in front of the screen, but most films have excellent quality, equal to the original as far as I can see, with all screen options for various languages, bonus scenes, etcetera. Simply ask to have it played before you buy: the bootleggers in Itaewon have players there and gladly pop it in for you if you want.

Look for the people selling on the streets, even better if not in Itaewon. The guy near my apartment by COEX sells 5 DVD's for 10,000 won, and they are right up to date. I got Babel about 3 or 4 months ago and it was perfect quality with Enlglish subtitles.

do they have a player to check the quality? are they always there?

a benefit of the Itaewon guys is that the exact same people have been selling them for years! you get to know them, they remember you by face, they gladly take back for exchange any of their films that had poor sound or other problems

but yeah, i guess none are real hoaxes, haven't heard of any massive scams selling blank or crap quality dvds. still...

Yeah, I would say 95% of the people I see selling them have players. I won't buy them if they don't have a player. One time I did return a video because it wouldn't work on my DVD player, even though it worked on his, and he changed it for me.

When I saw it in Canada it had subs- otherwise how would you know that the kids were goofing around and not meaning to hit the bus ( not a spoiler, as it happens in the first 5 minutes of the film)

I didn't think much of it myself, the point was blindingly obvious to anyone who's lived outside of an English speaking country for any length of time

blindingly obvious? ... so you missed the point! we are talking about films with only a percentage of nonenglish dialogue.

Here are some distinctions:

1) partial subtitles in korean only (at the theatres and/or on official korean DVD copies, as often happens!! leaving english speakers to guess at what 10-30% of the dialogue is!)

2) partial subtitles in english but with korean pasted over it (happens and makes half the subtitles unreadable)

3) partial subtitles in both korean and english (at the theatres, especially during film festivals)

4) partial subtitles in english only

The film was shown in korea as (1) even though some other films in the past have been (3) in the theatre and definitely there has been (2) on DVD. The op is looking for (4). An Itaewon DVD of Babel has (4).
