yes, i am now the proud owner of Dr. Seuss & Chuck Jones's classic animated The Grinch Who Stole Christmas. i watched it yesterday. i was thinking about showing it to my students, but they're high school boys and would probably think it was lame. plus, there's no subtitles and i don't want to have to explain what the hell Who Hash is.

additionally, i'd like to go on record as saying that Jim Carrey's version is pure, pure evil.

I downloaded a DVD quality version yesterday from torrentspy.com and will be showing my 6th graders next Friday (last day of class). Also got DVD quality versions of Charlie Brown Christmas, and Garfield's Christmas, both of which I'll probably show the kids over the next 2 weeks before winter vacation starts (all three videos are about 25 minutes, so they'll work into 40 minute classes nicely with an introduction/general discussion afterward).

If you're interested in exposing the kids to North American Christmas culture, you can never go wrong with National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation. My high school kids absolutely LOVED it last year.

My 6th graders absolutely loved "How the Grinch stole Christmas" last year. It didn't have subtitles, but colorful animation and great visuals let them follow the story.

sure why not?

don't all students prefer watching videos than listen to the teacher lecture?

think back when you were a student.

the grinch is great.

he's the biggest hater in the history of literature.

"A Christmas Story" was my favorite Christmas special while growing up..

anybody remember this one? the one with Ralphie.

What about writing out the script for two or three scenes and mixing up the sentences. Show the whole cartoon, but stop at those scenes and distribute a worksheet and let small groups put the sentences in order?

I don't think it would hurt to show them a picture of Boris Karloff (for real) and as Frankenstein. I think they'd enjoy the cartoon more if they had a visual image of Frankenstein to put with the voice.

Selecting Karloff to narrate Grinch was the single greatest voice casting in the entire history of entertainment. Very Happy

I wouldn't show that one to the kids (their parents might not appreciate the comedic value of the lamp).

The kid who played his friend, Flick, is now a porn actor and director.
