Can't remember about last year.. but is it typical in December to have a bit of a turn over in students?
I haven't lost all that many.. and it seems to have balanced out with incoming students so I am not worried.
Just sort of curious if this migratory pattern is par for the course. |

My place has lost a few students. Happened last year too. Things perked up again the following March.
Some of my students have gone to a newly opened Hagwon in town, and some have gone to science / math / korean academies. |

We've lost ten students, which is a really big hit for us as we're a tiny, 3-teacher (myself and the director included) outfit. I'll probably be pimped out to another haggie soon in order for the boss to pay the bills. |

That is about what I can remember. Most of my of the students who have left have been middle schoolers going to different academies. My boss is replacing them with Elementry kids. |

Yeah, that's weird. In the last few days, I lost some kids in my middle school class. They kept talking about some BIG exam at school. Perhaps they messed up on the exam, and they have to quit the English hogwon so that they can concentrate on other school subjects. Who knows? |

I temporarily lost a bunch of my middle school students so they could study for some big exam, but now they're all back.
Our school has actually just gained several more students, but lost a couple who got kicked out of the school for being pains in everyone's behinds. |

At my school we have lost maybe around 5 students in the last month. Over the last three weeks many of the kids didn't come because they had tests to study for. Some of them came back and some didn't. From what I have been told this is normal. |

SK Conq. Your comments are unbased and ignorant. Your idea that only bad teachers loose students is so absurd.
First of all, if that was the case. I think the original poster and others that admitted similar problems would have had a long talk with the director and probably have been fired. I have been at some schools where the teacher was directly responsible for loosing only 4 students after teaching for 6 months. She was immediately fired.
Students have a tendancy to change hagwons like most people change clothes. Sometimes it is just because their friend studies at a different place.
No teacher is a perfect match for every student. All of these teachers here might be excellent teachers but not every student will like them or want to study with them.
I personally think the Hagwon business would be better off if they offered set courses, like in many other countries. Students sign up for a 60 hour course with a set curriculum and lesson plans to follow. If students were accurately placed based on ability rather than age or if they all began on the first day rather than being able to start anytime, students and the classes would be more productive.
Before you start slamming hard working teachers who seem to dedicate themselves to improvement, why don't you learn to conquer your own ego. Bashing others doesn't make you a great teacher either.
It is quite normal in Hagwons this time of the year for many students not to re-enroll. They will be back in the spring or others will take their place. |

Yes, I know the "loose" / "lose" one is tricky, and the op did start down that road, but that gives you no excuse, Frank.
Firstly, I never accused him of anything just a question. I do remember him not finishing his first contract (correct me if I am wrong, and if so I apologize). One must look inward sometimes to make sure the fault does not lie with them. I do this everyday, and believe that it helps me grow, as a teacher and a person.
I think you seem a bit tense Frank, and need to loosen (note spelling and context) up a bit, it is not your responsibility to be defender of the "little guy." Maybe you are just a bit touchy about this subject as maybe it might have been said to you in the not so recent past. Either way, peace be with you and Jesus does love you. |

I lost quite a lot of students at this time last year, and it's happening again now. But then, we don't teach middle school. So I lose the older ones. Got a bunch of new ones too. More Beginners... <shudders> |

Yes you are right about the lose vs. loose. I was typing quickly and did not pay attention.
I am not tense at all. It is just my nature to dislike arrogant people who cannot seem to support others here.
Tell Jesus that Buddha doesn't give a damn what he cares about. I am not Christian and I don't need your narrow minded false warmth. Don't pretend to be some all loving christian when your words are meant to hurt and not share joy.
I do agree with you that it is necessary for all of us to examine are part in everything that we do. But not to the point where we loose focus and evoke self doubt.
One must look inward so the fault doesn't lie with him/herself. NOT THEM. One is singular them is plural. You criticize me and then make an even more obvious error. |

Meanwhile, back at the hogwan- every student the hogwan loses causes someone in the office to LOSE THEIR MIND with panic- even though the place has a net gain of students. |
