To be honest I don't have a definitive moral code myself. It's pretty much a work in progress as the jury is still out on many issues for me. In the interim I'm kind of using 'Don't hurt anybody, don't get hurt' as a guiding principle.

I've pretty much rejected or re-evaluated everything I was taught growing up and sometimes (since I don't believe in the existence of a god, or even the concept of good and evil) I wonder if the idea of a moral code has any meaning at all. Still I do feel the need to have some sort of principles to live my life by.

What standard do you use?

That's deep and I'm no expert nor example to follow.
I want and try to follow Mom's morals. She doesn't like this reference, but I always say she's a saint.
What I got from Dad and tell my kids is simple.
1. Don't do anything stupid.
2. Take care of your teeth.

Judging by the posts on this site, I'd say you are asking the wrong crowd.

Not too far off. I was raised by Catholic parents but I think it was TV that influence my morality concerning most moral issues. You can also simply see morality as a social contract, 'I won't steal your TV if you don't steal mine'.
You can also see from a Darwinian perspective, humans as social animals will try to help each other out rather than murder and rape each other, which often only have a short term reward and are self destructive(exclusion from the social animals you need to survive). But both murder and helping each other out are still selfish in their own ways.

so did you vote devised my own or other. it was a toss up for me but went with other. "devised my own" sounds a bit isolated.

i heard recently that children begin forming a moral code at the age of three.

I don't think it's possible to devise your own moral code so long as you live within any type of society. Even if you were raised by apes, you'd still have a moral code based on those around you. Sure, you can refine your beliefs a bit, but by and large your general outlook is a reflection of your environment and experiences.

My only moral code is this: Do unto others as I would have them do unto me.

I think a famous guy said that once. I think it's all-encompassing. If it doesn't apply to a situation, then the situation probably is not a moral issue.

I got 1 and 2 from my Dad also.

My Mom told me to wear sun block.

What guides you when making decisions where you are the primary or only person affected?

This is my problem with most moral codes: they go to great lengths discussing the proper way to interact with others, but they lack substantial discussion on how to live ones life apart from others.

What should my career choice be? Where should I live? How should I spend my money? These things are very important but rarely discussed in the field of ethics, and I think that's a mistake.

How one should go about making these decisions is rarely discussed in the field of ethics, and I think that's a mistake.
