Hello school folk,

Out of curiosity, when does the winter break start for you guys? Are they all the same through Korea? Or, do they vary from school to school? Our last day is the 29th of December........and, all of my friends tell me that their last day is the Friday before Christmas.

Any info would be great.

Yep, its totally the roll of the dice. Depends on your school, school board and principal.

My school finishes on Dec. 22, so I thought I would be free for 10 days or so...nope. I have to show up at an empty school on Dec. 26th to 29th and Jan. 2nd to 5th. They said the janitor will open the doors for me. I have to be there for at least 4 hours. Unbelieveable!

They said I can use my one week winter vacation at that time instead but in my mind, that should be a free holiday time. Other teachers in my area get that week or so off plus their one week winter holiday. Not I, and as a result I am not happy.

Lots of different stories depending on the area, type of school and kindness of the principals. At least I don't have to work on Christmas.

That is pretty bad. It's about time foreigners working in the public school system were treated better. Luckily, where I am, most teachers have a full winter vacation and are treated much better than the average. I think it comes down to having a good school board.

If the Korean teachers are going to be there, too, I'd go, and we can all have a soju party every day.

If they are not going, and I'm going to be the only teacher in the school? *beep* that noise! I'm staying home. If they don't like it, they can fire me. Plenty of other jobs out there.

I have 7 working days. After complaints, they managed to find me an extra 2 days. Added together with public holidays and weekends..lookslike a solid 2 weeks.

Stil not enough though considering I have to do winter camp: KT's get 5 weeks in summer and same again in winter. My official days off amount to 14 in the year. looks like I'll have to pull a few more sickies.

I've got it pretty good, I'm off from Dec. 22-Feb 4 and then Feb 17-28. Also, no winter camp unless I want to for the extra money. I like my school.

Hehe, you are obviously from Hoju.

I am getting just over 3 weeks off in January. The school winter vacation starts on December 21st, but I have to do 10 days of winter camp. I think I have more time off in February to do as I please.

Public Middle school.
Last day near the end of december.
Teacher travel jan 1-3. Whatever, not going. Camps from jan 5 or so until about the 17th. Nothing till Mar 2 or3.
Here's the joy. They have graciously said that can choose any period from end of camp to beginning of school to take my 7 days.
The rest of the time I am expected to sit at my desk.
Got a wife and two year old son to see. Am looking at other options cause thats just silly.

Public middle schools.
Last day is December 29th, then camps start on Jan 2nd, until the 12th.
Then I'm not exactly sure what happens until March, when I change schools. Hoping for holidays during end of Jan/Feb, but I can't guarantee it - haven't brought it up just yet in case it gives them time to schedule in some time-fillers/wasters for me.

Yeah, I'm a little upset about this vacation/winter break scheme. It is well known that I make less money then the teachers here (they all make close to 3.0 a month). The school is making sure to work me up to the full hours in the contract for the winter break....assholes. Some folks I know don't have to do anything during the break, because their schools are not operating a babystitting institution during the break.

Yeah, I know I signed the contract. But, the more I dig up on this, the more I find out that we public teachers are still getting screwed over here.

See, what happend was that I was told that the break would begin on the 27th. I was told this TWICE. So, I was contemplating over going home for Christmas. I was going to ask the principle to just let me go home the Saturday before Christmas. I mean, these are reasonable people, and not letting me to that over a matter of one day would be unreasonable. So, I start getting excited and making plans. Then, I ask one more time, just to be sure......................then I find out, "Oh, it is the 29th".

These fucking people. The funny thing is that these people are so dumb, that they don't have any clue of the impact that just had.

sigh.............well, I can leave whenever I want. So, if I feel that this really is not fair, then *beep* em.........there will be another sucker to take my place.

Happy Holiays

Public Elementary Schools. (In the countryside).

Last day for teachers and students is Dec 26, the teachers will go to Jeju-do for a "seminar" i.e trip from the 27-29. They wanted me to go too, but I said no. I have that week off. Winter schedule is my after school classes plus a block of 2 or 3 classes lumperd together designated as "camp" class. I got my student lists and timetable today. Jan 3rd to Feb 2nd 9-1. Then Feb 5-9th off.
