Have any posters read "What's So Good about Korea, Maarten?" by the Dutch guy? The cover shows the dude wrapped in a Korean flag.
I thought it was lame, full of silly generalizations. Actually it smacked of arrogance and put Koreans down.
Anybody have a thought on it? |

I would be interested to read it, but probably not interested enough to actually pay for a copy. What is arrogant about it anyway? You referred to "silly generalisations", but I'd imagine it's impossible to avoid generalisations when writing a book about your opinions of a country. |

A friend lent it to me several months ago, but I haven't read it. It's sitting here on my desk now. My friend seemed to enjoy it, though, |

The work was uneven.
It did contain silly generalizations and it was about on par with other books of its genre. Books like "Bobby does Japan" with some white dude on the cover flanked by two Geisha looking women. |

I read it a couple of months ago.
I braced myself for an apologist's answer to the question of the title (What's so good about Korea, Maarten?) and found instead that one is provoked to ask him the question after reading his book!
That said, he doesn't have a negative attitude about the country in general, though he's a bit condescending from his Christian pedestal.
Overall, not as good as I'd hoped but still interesting enough, with some new stuff to me. |

Is that like "Debbie Does Dallas"?
Quite an accomplishment for Bobby, I'd say~ |

Peri...I was paraphrasing the title of some of the travel books out there...but it would be some kind of achievement indeed... |

Speaking of the Dutch and Koreans, anyone ever heard of Hendrick Hamel, the Dutch explorer who was the first westerner to write about Korea? He landed here by mistake, was retained with his crew for 13 years, and finally escaped. Click that link for an intriguing tale. |

Yes indeed, and the document he created is actually quit valuable for Koreans.
It gave them a possibility to check some facts |
