First of all i need to tell you, i am more of an Agnost, mixed with Atheistic approach to religion.
My wife had met people on the subway doing a survey for a student regarding religion. To help them out, she filled in 2, one for her and one for me.
My wife is a sucker for friendly people, so after a while talking, they exchanged phone numbers. They had the opportunity to meet, i never met them ....
Today, they wanted to surprise her, and my wife asked if i could join her.
I go "OK", eventhough at the moment, i hardly have any time available to waste, i still wanted her to be comnfortable.
We go to a place 15 minutes to the North East of Guri, forgot the name already, and had a bite to eat.
After we ate, i ended up in a church, calling themselves "The Church of God".
Now if i would be in Belgium, that would be my que to leave, since i already knew what lay before me. A nice ceremony from people who mean well, but want to save my soul.
Let me tell you, these people are good people, i truly believe that. But their belief makes them blind.
I ended a 2 hour discussion on religion by saying " God gave me a choice, and i will make my choice when i need to"
they ofcourse cannot disagree with that, because disagreeing that God gave you a choice is a clear win for any non-believer.
Anyways
I wasted 4 hours and 40.000 won (i bought them dinner), so if my wife ever wants to meet people again, i am going to make sure i have seen there face before accepting. |

Darnit
I forgot the biggest joke yet in the entire discussion
The Church of God claims
"That God has come to Korea to save the world, and the name is Mother God!"
!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Don't the Jehova guys say the same thing, but then in America?
Yeah Father god - Mother God, logical no?
This was written on a small white pebble ... somewhere
Due to some very abstract passage in the book of Revelations, saying something about the most far east point of the world (they ofcourse meant the continent, NOT japan)
I was like, what about America?, and to the east of America we have ... Europe, and to the east we have Israel again ......
I was saying that in a round world there is no fartest point in the east, she answered God is all-knowing.
I was being too friendly with these people.
Then they used the bible ofcourse as proof of the existence of God, at some point.
I said, if you do not believe in the teacher, why believe what he teaches?
aa man
this for 2 hours remaining calm, at least they gave me a coffee that wasn't half bad. |

Ha, ha, I think I also wasted two hours of my life with these people. The Worldwide Church of God, something like that.
(This was back in the day before I realized that I would meet someone every day in Korea who would want me to join their church. Also before I realized what an effective tactic insisting they first accompany me to "my" church could be in warding off unwanted religious nuttiness.)
Anyway we spent a good chunk of time "discussing" how some Roman emperor back in the day decided that Sunday should be the first day of the week because the sun was his favorite god. Therefore, anyone who still worships on Sunday is a heathen who worships the sun. I tried to ask about why people who worship on Saturday are not worshipping the heathen god Saturn, but apparently it is different because it is the 7th day of the week.
I also tried to mention that many calendars (European style, I believe) start the week on Monday, therefore Sunday is the 7th day of the week. But that wasn't a valid argument since the calendar this lady had in front of her started with Sunday as the first day of the week. Apparently God's calendar also starts on Sunday and ends on Saturday.
Ha, ha, then like three weeks later they give me a pamphlet inviting me to one of their sacraments. The service will be held on Sunday morning at 8 am. Ha, ha, I told them I couldn't make it due to not wanting to worship like a heathen on Sunday.
They also tried to lure me in with the "Mother God" thing. I don't have any problems with a Mother God, but sadly, I don't really care what they think her name is, and of course, they'll only tell me if I join their church. That's more pathetic than those teasers for the news: "What popular dinner food causes cancer? Tune in at 11."
But I will say this, they sure did try hard. I made them work for it, too. I'm naughty like that. I figure, if I'm letting you waste my time, then I'm sure gonna waste yours too. |

I had a run-in with people from the same church--either the Worldwide Church of God or International Church of God--I can't remember the name exactly. I was in a small city on the east coast and was approached by two people speaking moderately poor English...at least for purposes of religious conversion. They asked me to fill out an English-language survey they were doing for a "school project," then looked at my answers and tried to convince me why my existing Christian beliefs aren't accurate. As I normally carry my Bible in my bag, I pulled it out and showed them verses that disagreed with some of their teachings. They looked them up in their Korean Bible but didn't agree with what we were reading. At that point I extracted myself by telling them "I can't convince you that I'm right and you can't convince me that you're right. Let's just agree to disagree." Although we exchanged email addresses and phone numbers, I haven't heard from any of them again.
They were nice enough, earnest people who only took up about 10 minutes of my time. I can't believe there's a large English-speaking target audience here that they're aiming to convert. They had several non-mainstram beliefs that referred back to Jewish Law or other obscure passages so it was easy to recognize them as a cult-type group. I can see how someone a little pushier might offend people by insisting that people believe their version of the Gospel. |

| I was about one day in Korea before the missionaries paid me a visit. Much confusion and shaking of heads ensued as I don't speak Korean and they didn't speak English. But I shut the door after a minute or so and they left. |

| My first week in Korea I was approached by this korean bloke who told me that he had recently returned after spending nine years in Canada. He said that he missed being able to speak english and could he talk to me for awhile. Having nothing better to do I agreed (I should have listened to my mother!). He turned out to be a raelian (not an alien altho' apparently the difference is negligeable) and I ended up listening to an hour long lecture on the subject. I've learnt my lesson (I hope your wife has too). |

Some nice people introduced themselves to me the other day and then told me to follow them for learning. I got out of there before they got their hands on my soul.
Who here has been blessed by that "Jesus God Bless You" woman in Hongdae? Nowadays when I see her coming I hide behind someone else so I don't get blessed. |
