|

As some of you may remember, last week I posted on this forum with a question about how much I should expect to get paid for working such-and-such hours per month.
To be specific, I wanted to know how much I should expect to be paid for teaching 120 hours per month and working (total time spent at the school) 200 hours per month. (Or . . . roughly teaching 30 per week and working a total of 50 hours per week: 9am - 7pm M-F.)
Most people told me that I would be insane to work such long hours . . . that I would burn out in a month or two . . . others said it was possible, but that I should demand a minimum salary of 3.0 million won.
These comments prompted me to keep looking at more job postings. The trouble is most of the jobs out there for newbies have similar working hours (30 hours teaching per week, perhaps as low as 40 hours total per week).
So, that begs the question. How much does the average newbie work? And how much should he / she expect to get paid for such hours. (Lets assume no previous experience, no TEFL, etc.)
And PLEASE verify your claims by providing links to a current job posting online, or give some information about your situation if you are reporting on your current job!
Thanks! |

I'm a newbie and have the following working hours:
M 10:00-17:45
T 10:00-14:15
W 10:00-17:45
Th 10:00-15:15
F 10:00-17:45
Plus 10-15 minutes on either side for getting ready / cleaning up, but that's not required. I write most of my lesson plans up at home. Includes one unpaid hour for lunch everyday. Total teaching hours: 27:45, total hours at work: 32:45 |

I'm a newbie.
I teach from 3-9.30 Monday-Friday, but I'm at work from 2-10 with a half-hour dinner break.
I get paid 1.9 million.
Compared to other 'teachers' I know, I'm getting ripped off. Still, the work is a piece of cake and I don't really feel that I deserve to be paid as much as I am anyway. |

Hey The Hierophant, I see you have a Pan's Labyrinth icon... have you seen it? I saw it at a film fest in Sept and the director spoke afterwards... what an odd guy, but a great (although unsettling) film.
Anyways, to the OP, I'm not even in Korea (still deep in the job hunt, phone rings about a dozen times a night!), but most of the job offers I'm considering are 5-6 teaching hours a day, plus 1-2 prep hours on top of that (with breaks included), mostly at 2.2 million won. So, those jobs do exist! |

I recently obtained a pirated DVD of it, though I havn't had a chance to sit down and watch it yet. The artwork looks incredible and the synopsis I've read leads me to believe this will be a truly special movie.
How awesome that you got to hear Guillermo del Toro speak! You're very lucky indeed.
I want to see this movie at the cinema, but seeing as I don't speak Spanish and the subtitles in cinemas here will be in Korean I may have to give it a miss. Still, when it's officially released on DVD I'll splash out on a 'legit' copy. |
