It may be good or it may be bad but it is not America... My current school is Taiwan. The workers renovating the bathroom are smoking and drinking... There is brandy in the school fridge... And, I am a sober minded Lord of English Here. But, as an English Lord I do not condescend... Yet I wonder- there was drinking / drink at My Korean School as well and yet there is the argument that forbidding and hiding these vices is only making children more prone to experimen t- and of course there is the Euro drinking ages that are lower than the USA but perhaps there is about the same or less alcohol abuse... Well than again there is Russia the number one drunk country of the world ... Still I question the wisdom of indulging with the rum or soju Devil in front of your charge s...
Do you all drink / smoke / gamble / play Grand Theft Auto / scratch your butt in front of your students?
If so why?
I some times wonder what will happen to all the punks I taught when they get to college will they get smashed and lose everything in some forest hiking drunk picnic party in Jeju. I have yet to buy a beer here. I recall a chum who posts here telling me Taiwan beer is terrible- I did try some Corona in Kenting, but maybe that is imported from Mex and not produced domestically. Unless they import Mexicans like they do Thais and Filipinos here yeah yeah maybe they have a factory in Taipei with a Latin work force. You all know the myth of Coronas ?
Do you argue that all things should be done in the open if they are worthy to do?
Anyhow you won't see me at Club 66 drinking on New Years Again... Sorry I am in Taiwan ... |

Who are you trying to fool? You already drank that whol bottle of brandie didn't you? Nothing else could excuse the lack of logik, grammer, punkuation, etc.
I prefer to drink, smoke, gamble in front of my students. The scratching of butt and playing of GTA is optional. Why? Because I can. |

Chances to drink brandy should always be taken. Always. |

In Belgium you can start drinking beer without the consent of your parents from the age of 16. But you can only start driving when you are 18. Carrying a gun is almost impossible to do.
I had my first beer when i was 8, given to me by my parents. Now i am a convinced teetotaler, and i will be the last man on earth to refuse my friends a good beer. There is no conflict.
Beer used to be the only thing you could drink safely long long time ago in Europe, and therefore, it is still considered a good practice to teach children to drink with moderation early on.
Any substance that makes people feel better can be abused, what is important is that society should be against abuse, not use.
I also don't do drugs, although i do drink too much coffee. |

My father smoked, drank, gambled in front of me but I wasn't at all tempted to repeat the example he showed. I loved him dearly but smelt the smoke, saw the effect of alcohol and the habits of jackpot hopefuls, so I am grateful to his reverse psychology in setting a poor enough example to be a good example of what to be averse toward. I wanted to be like him EXCEPT in those kind of areas.

I hear ya.
Though I can't directly relate to the feeling many have to have a SECOND drink. I don't get that on a visceral level. I just don't share the desire. But then I just think of how I feel after having one piece of a chocolate bar, how I never fold up the bar, always finish it off. That urge for a second bite isn't much different than the urge for a second drink, I think, to use the only parallel I can muster. |
