I've noticed a distinct trend on the Buy/Sell/Trade forum.
It seems that about, oh, 80% of the people who post used cameras and computers there ask for about the same price as a brand new one.

What is your opinion as to why that might be?

Do they have no friends to whom they could sell at a reasonable price? (I'd say 40-50% off the new price is fair if it's of any age at all)

Are they misinformed as to the real current street prices on their now technologically-surpassed items? (the pace of change is rapid in the computer and camera fields)

Are they greedy?

Inevitably, someone (a few times, me) posts the current price of a new one, and feelings are hurt.
Crying or Very sad Rolling Eyes

The sad part comes when, sometimes, someone buys the overpriced item.

I've posted about that on over priced computers. I think people honestly don't know the value and want to regain as much as they can.

Personally I just give away shit that is too old, or sell it for a cup of coffee.

I've noticed that too. Some ridiculous farcical profiteering attempts on there.

Exactly. Cameras are usually updated with a newer version within the year. They lose in value quickly. yet you have guys demanding almost the same price for a year old model simply because its still in working order...Far as I can see a camera should go for 2/3rds to half its original price after a year.

If you want to shift your gear people, U have to compromise some...

What I found a little sinister recently was that a certain poster offering second hand electronic goods above the value even of equivalent new ones, managed to get his thread locked after his original post!

This meant no one could point out to prospective buyers that they were getting a raw deal. Since most of us operate on the principle 'buyer beware' we can do with all the input we can get from others who are more 'in the know'. I felt whoever locked the thread for him was being way too partisan.

Could there be....(dare I say it?).. double standards at work here in our beloved davesesl???

I'd sometimes see some crazy stuff in newspaper classified ads back in the States. Things like an old Commodore 64 for $250. The seller probably paid $400 for it back in 1983 and figures, heck, I'll knock $150 off the original price. That's a great deal. Laughing

I'm in the market for a second hand lap top and noticed this trend across all of the classified online boards.

A smart consumer would shop around surely, and realise what the market price is for what they're looking for.

Still, people are offering over priced secondhand goods - and people are buying them. If you can find someone who'll take it at that price why wouldn't you?

People also seem to think it's fine to sell stuff that originally came with the apartment.

Maybe they think it's a collector's item? Laughing

I do understand trying to get something for used electronics, though. I hate the idea of simply tossing away a laptop that I paid $1600 for. But, I'm learning to come to grips with the reality of our digital age...things just aren't valuable once you've bought them...
