Does anyone here use Wikipedia? For those of you who thought you were getting the up to date version of events and history, or that Wikipedia is a good alternative to the mainstream media, may want to take a look at the discussion on the Education Forum:

I use it, but do not treat it like gospel. I'm well aware of its flaws and limitations. It is still a very useful tool, however. |

I think we all do, but we probably all share the same sense of when we see a wiki article someone posts supposedly in favour of what they're arguing for. It'd be nice if folks showed evidence of other reading, wunnit? |

It's quick and easy, and as a source here its fine more often than not, considering this is a CE forum and not an academic forum.
As a side note, here in China the entire site is banned. |

There was a recent study by the journal Science, albeit of limited scope, that indicated the wikipedia was more accurate than the Encyclopedia Britannica.
On stuff with little controversy it is very good. If there is any controversy around the topic, it is worth a dip into the discussion tab.

When I was at uni people in class would try to use wiki as a source. The teacher then proceeded to bitch them out ;p |

At university you should be going to primary literature, and preferably peer reviewed....

I tell my students that looking something up on wikipedia is a bit like asking one of your friends. They might be an expert, they might be completely mistaken, often they might give you some ideas on where to go for some more information. But just like you wouldn't cite one of your friends in academic writing, and neither should you ever cite wikipedia. |

Wiki is great for a quick reference for facts like names and dates. |
