I am thinking about canceling my cell phone and going phoneless. I think I can save a lot of money (at least 40,000 won a month).
I don't want a landline phone because I'll probably have to pay expensive installation fees and commit to a year contract.
I'm not a "phone person" so I think I'll just call up friends from pay phones when I want to meet them. Does anybody here do this? Does it work for you? |

So your school doesn't provide a landline phone in your apartment? I don't have a cell phone yet either, thanks to that. Exactly one of the reasons I left Japan - no landline phone in apartment and installation would have cost about the = of 700,000 KRW. Not having a cell works fine for me. |
I confess that I don't know enough about getting a landline here. I am sure that all of the hardware is installed in the apartment, but there's always that silly administration fee to get you started on your first bill. In Canada, it's like $50 or something just to turn on your phone service.
I don't know here if you have to commit to a year for landline phone service. I am mid contract right now, so that wouldn't work for me. |

It sounds very reasonable to do this in 2006. Go for it. |

What service do you have? I have KTF and switched to pre-pay. 10,000 a month for like 40 minutes. Which is about 39 more than I usually use. But I still have it there in case of emergencies. |

I had a mobile phone in 1998/1999.
That was the last time.
My school provides teachers with free mobile phones but I never took one.
However, I've got a land line at home. Between that and e-mail, people have no problem getting in touch with me. |

If you are a social person, not having a handphone can be a headache for your friends. If you are late or plans changed , or your friends are late or their plans changed, it sucks not being able to get in touch with you. |

I live 5 minutes from my school and have no privates. If I am not home, I do not have time to talk to anyone anyway as I am either at school or the fitness club , for example. I am glad to see there are others here with a landline, but no mobile phone. It is not the cost for me, as I have a lot of disposable income, it is just the headache of getting calls at inconvienient times. A lot of people think I am crazy to be without a mobile phone, but I feel many of them are thinking about themselves more than anything. God forbid they might have to make a couple of calls to get ahold of me. I do rack up a pretty good bill each month, around 30,000 or more placed to mobile phones plus the monthly charge of about 17,000. I think installation runs less than 100,000 won but dont know about a contract. Landline phones have been on the decline in recent years and I think they are glad to get the business, so I doubt that the terms are too restrictive. |

I'll agree with this. Phones are a matter of convenience for both you and your friends.
I'm the opposite of going phoneless, BTW.... I have 3--cell, home & Vonage. I get the most use out of the latter. I'd love to get rid of my home phone & just use my cell for Korea calls, but I get crappy reception at my apt. |

Yeah that's what I do, with LG though, unfortunately (patchy reception in corridors and elevators). Max I pay is 20k a month, usually 10, since I rarely talk on the phone. Text text text, that's the way to go. |

My school provides a phone at home. But I'm cell phoneless. My circle of friends all have cells. So if they're late, I can just dial them at a pay phone. Not much of a problem. |

I was phoneless my first year in Korea. I'm a bit of a hermit and didn't miss it a bit. However, now that I have a few friends that I want to be in touch with, I found it SOOOOOO easy to pick up a cheapo used phone (40,000 won with no camera- my students always look at it in amazement). It's not on a plan, just a card phone. I pay about 20,000 every 2 months or so for my usage, as my friends usually call me or we just text. I'd never pay for a subscription here. |
