Try your local Asia Mart or go to Ansan. Plenty of Thai specialty grocers there.

Not sure since I am in Cheongju, but may I suggest making the trip down to Ansan? It'll take you around an hour on the subway, but the shops are awesome, there are lots of decent restaurants (check out the Indonesian ones too) and its like stepping out of Korea for a few hours.

There are few shops called Halal shops run by Pakistanis and Bangladeshis found in many places. They sell tamarind. There are 2 near the suwon station... I usually buy there.

I am interested to know what Thai food you are making that requires tamarind. The only recipes that I can think of I couldn't find the other ingredients.

I am assuming that everyone is talking about the paste rather than the fresh pods. Is it the sweet or the sour tamarind that you can find? I brought a kilo of the sweet type with me. I make son-in-law eggs once in a while.

I think the hardest part for me to cook Thai here is finding fresh herbs and other ingredients. Like Kah, or grapao and the Korean chilis just don't give the right flavor that rat poop chilis do.

first, thanks to all for giving good tips on finding ingredients. It's always a happy moment when you find things you were looking so hard for.
I'm a chef from the states working as a chef here. My last job was at a thai place and I was looking for tamarind so I could make pad thai sauce. I called Hannam Market, the guy told me he no longer sold it. When I asked him to check the shelves he just hung up. I went there on the suspicion that he was just being lazy and of course, there it was, in two nice neat piles. There was some good cury, so I bought that too.
eat well folks
