A: Hmmm, let's see. How to get a good, objective viewpoint on a story?
B: I know! Interview a guy whose entire livelihood is enveloped in the
promotion of the product!
According to the story, Hyundai has hit it big in SA due to excellent quality and ingenious marketing. I would say it has more to do with the price. That's why I bought my Hyundai.

True......about 20 years ago.
Korean cars aren't what they used to be. They broke into the market at the bottom end but have been moving up ever since. I admit rather slowly, but still.
They sell a good product. |

You might want to read this:
The Irrelevance of Truth in Korea
| Quote: |
| I have personally been asked or privy to conversations in which Korean reporters have asked the promoters or organizers of events to write their own stories, then submit them to the reporter for "cleaning up" and final publication. The mutual benefit is supposed to be that the interested parties get to have a glowing report or review on their event or organization, while the reporter gets to do less work and cool his or her heels. |

come on... thats how journalism works pretty much everywhere. the journalist has deadlines pressing on him, and meanwhile someone comes along basically offering to write him a whole damn article. even if its just fluff to promote some company, the journalist is a busy guy, so he'l probably go along with it.
maybe not so much in big and respected newspapers, but plenty of local rags back home do it.
anyway, this of course does not take away from the fact that the korea herald is a miserable joke of a newspaper... |

Indeed. Reporters ask around looking for someone who will give them the quote they need for their story. A recent stink was movie reviewers praising crap movies because they get their names above the title in ads.

| I read the IHT. I recently didnt have enough change for the IHT and didnt want to bother paying with a 만원 and I bought the Korea Herald (or might have been the other piece of trash English language daily in this country, the KT). Im never going to make that mistake again. The front page story was about VANK for chissakes, and how great they are. Don Quixote would have been proud. |

| Who is Yoav? The dateline says Johannesburg which means the story should have been filed from there. Is he a South African home for the holiday? Did the KH (or Hyundai) send him on location? Or are they just making that up too? |

| Sounds like a smart freelancer who knows what the papers and readership (as if Koreans really are the target readership) want to see. Got someone to pay for his trip down there, too. |

Which is exactly what happens in the U.S., except that the promoters or organizers do so without being asked to by the reporter. |

| Most reporters in the States (not all, not at all) cull what they think is important from what the promoters/organizers pitch to write their own stories. Entertainment/celebrity media the grand exception. |

Here's a great one about how Australian media, simply working from press releases, gave a "psychic" all kinds of free publicity. Not one bothered to check a single source in the press releases to find out everything was 100% made up.
