Today I went to the bank to transfer money. It was crowded with people waiting. I went up to the counter where the bank's one English-speaking staff member was working (his English is better than some English teachers I've met). He saw me, stopped what he was doing, asked me what I wanted and got to it right away, putting on hold the client with whom he was going over a number of papers. When I left most of the people who were waiting around when I came in were still waiting.

Despite whatever people say about getting poor / slow service because they're not Korean, if you're white, have a relationship with Koreans, and are viewed to be in a respectable position in society, you get treated like royalty a lot of the time.

Yep.

In my bank, all tellers notice me and smile when I walk into their bank and takes me right into the VIP room. The only time I ever waited was my first wire transfer. Even then, a nice looking lady (a manager) came up and took me to the VIP room next to her office to help me with my transfer. Love banking in Korea.

Are you in a small town or city? When I lived in Incheon that sort of thing never happened.

well i loathe banking in Korea - no take that back - I loathe banking at my local (an only exchange bank in town). I always get treated with contempt and suspision. have to produce proof of earnings and they ALWAYS phone my school to confirm. Generally suxs.

At my bank most of the customers are foreigners and I am the only teacher.

I get no special treatment for being white - coz I'm thought to be not 'that kind of white'.

Yes, it is. Say 'howdy' to Mr. Jin for me next time you're in the bank.

The first time I went to a movie here, the lobby was crowded to over-flowing. The manager grabbed me by the elbow and pulled me (and my Korean friend) to the front of the line, opened the door and let us in, kept back the crowd till we were comfortably seated, then opened the door to the great unwashed.

I was so embarrassed I never went back to that theater.

Last time I was at the Nowon Dept. of Motor Vehicles to renew my drivers license, I noticed the long line of people. Sad
I then looked to my right and saw the Foreigners Help desk. Very Happy
Was escorted around for my eye test and some paperwork and was in and out before the other line moved much at all. Felt kind of bad about it. Embarassed

I got a guy that takes care of me at a bank near my house....always gets on what I need him to as soon as I come into the room. I whisper sweet nothings in his ear....always kiss his butt..and he never gives me crap when I send out a lot more money than I "should" be sending....its all about having a clean-cut white boy look, charisma, and a generous helping of butthole smooching that gets my money where it needs to go with a quickness.
