I'm currently teaching an e-mail writing course for students preparing for dispatch to various English-speaking countries. Many of my students are going to India, Singapore, and the Philippines.

I need to know from someone with first-hand knowlege whether these countries follow U.S. e-mail writing conventions (e.g. punctuation in the salutation and closing) and spelling, or British (e.g. no punctuation in the opening and closing). If any of you have any actual knowlege of writing styles in these countries, please tell me. I am also interested in the level of formality typically used in business writing in these countries.

Just like you, I can guess based on their histories (e.g. India was a British colony), but I would like to hear from anyone who knows something more specific.

In business and collegiate work the Philippines follows American conventions for writing, spelling and grammar. (1st hand knowledge).

In daily life it is a rough mixture of Tagalog, Bisayan, English with some Spanish tossed in just to confuse the issue (depending on what region you are talking about).

Tagalog and Bisayan have an extra consonant sound tossed into the alphabet (ng).

Singapore and India follow the British format. The Philippines follows American.
