The other song thread had me thinking about a recent Korean song, dunno the singer, someone new. The tune was blatantly stolen from Aqua (can't recall which song... "Cartoon Heroes" maybe?). Anyone know the name of the Korean group that is currently singing it? I've only seen it the one time.

Any other blatant ripoffs? eg. one of the World Cup songs taken from Pet Shop Boys' version of Go West.

Britney Spears' people sued Lee Hyori's people. Lee Hyori's "Get ya" is an exact copy of Spears' "Do Somethin."

Funny, Smee, but neither Spears nor Lee wrote either song. They just performed them.

There have been some glaring ripoffs here!
Sorry, don't know the singer, but a few years ago there was a female singer with a song called "Blue Sky". The verses were a full on steal of the verses from Guns 'N' Roses' "Sweet Child o' Mine".
Also, there was that pop tune that was ripping off Cindy Lauper's "She Bop". It was called "Oppa" or something like that.
Truly dreadful!

Truth is that most of these performers have no idea that these songs are ripoffs because they don't write them. They get the songs from their entertainment companies. The companies control everything.

Of course, P. Diddy or whatever that jagoff calls himself has made ridiculous millions by ripping off other songs!

There's a difference between getting permission from an artist who made a song 20 years ago that's no longer in radio circulation, sampling it, and paying royalties to the original artist who also benefits from some latter year exposure and blatantly ripping off a song that's still on the charts without permission.

Yeah, both methods are void of artistic merit, but at least one of them benefits the creative source.

I've recently heard a Korean song that is a carbon copy of "Let's Get Retarded" by the BEPs. Absolutely shameless.

I'm trying to find the title and artist of a recent K-pop song that starts out with the Smoke On the Water riff and then starts sounding like Bryan Adams.

A song like "Oppa" is called "remake" in Korea. Maybe Konglish.

Good point seoulsucker!

Sting and Jimmy Page actually collaborated with Diddy. Why? I'll never figure out. It's not like they need the money!

There's a funny story about the idiot singer Mun Hee-Jun. When H.O.T. broke up, he went solo and tried to be all rockin' out- ripping off the style that Seo Taiji ripped off from Korn.
He was boasting that he was going to be the 'new godfather of Korean rock'. Well, according to legend, he was being interviewed by a respected elder statesman of Korean rock(don't remember his name). The older dude asked him if he was looking to become a sort of rock legend in the vein of the Rolling Stones and the like. Mun answered with "Who is Rolling Stones?".
He had no idea who the Stones are!

Mun hee-jun was such a poor guy though. He was mocked so badly by netizens as if he's the no. 1 enemy of the state.

A few nights ago in a restaurant I heard an Ace of Base song. Then I realised it was in Korean. Can't remember what song it was now. It was a blatant ripoff.

I posted a thread about plagiarism in Korean music recently on another board and everyone there tried to tear into me, saying any crazy thing they could about "It's a tribute" or "Anyone who has ears can hear these two songs have some subtle differences."

Throughout the thread there's a list of various songs that have been plagiarised, including the big thing with Lee Hyori recently.

If you want to do some browsing, watch me tear into some Asian-American teeny-boppers here.

So you're saying that nearly all hip hop lacks artistic merit? Because that's essentially what hip hop is.

Wasn't there a song a few years ago that used the very same music as that song in "Beverly Hills Cop"? I think it sang the word "Champion" over and over.

Psy. And I would call that a sample, not plagiarizing. Most of the song has NO similarity to Axel Foley's song.
