I'm killing a week around Seoul and thought that instead of hitting up friends for crash-pads and have to worry about keys, etc., since all my friends are at work during the day, I'd just get a room somewhere for a week. And since it's been so long since I did the hostel scene, why not try to meet some travellers who aren't teachers and stay at one? This isn't Banglampu, after all.

So I looked one up, made a reservation, got there and asked to see a room. No. Why not? Can't I just check out a room? Look at? '방 보다' I say, jesturing. No. Why?

'You see room maybe you no stay'.

'Um, yes, I see. Indeed, maybe I no stay. All right, off to a yeogwan'.

Another brilliant business strategy curtesy of hangook-saram: don't let the customer see the room in case he declines it. Much better simply to turn away business.

Good one but why didn't you say from the beginning that Koreans can't speak Engrish well?

Yeah, you should have said that, hahaha! You just walked away from an illogical impasse instead of penetrating it with your unsheathed, Excalibur of Reason (TM). Are you on vacation taking it easy or something, hahaha!

That's par for course. When you ask the price of something anywhere other than the major department stores (markets, for example), and then you don't buy from them, you're instantly persona non gratis.

That's awesome business practice; she must have learned it in Business class 101 "How not to only run a business but also run away customers at the same time".

It happens in many places, a couple of years ago my girlfriend(Korean) and I were taking a driving holiday around Gangwon-Do, and most cheap hotels/motels would not let us see the room before we checked in, and then ajumma always looked surprised when up just picked up our bags and just walked out.

Usually they know that their rooms are so bad that if you did happen to inspect them, you would be straight outta there!!!

This is funny. I just got back from the Philippines. When we first got there, we went to this resort, and I wanted to stay there, I didn't need to see the room. They asked me if I wanted to see the room, and I said 'no'. They didn't know what to do. So, they told me that I should go see the room. So, I went with the manager, she opened the room, and I instantly said I would take it. It was a good experience. Stayed there for 7 nights.

Koreans just can't stand the fact that someone might call them out on their bullsh*t.

We wanted to look at a room on Wando, a hellhole of an island down south, and the manager said "Just pay the money and I'll give you the key blah blah", so we said "OK" and looked elsewhere, but we couldn't find anything for a reasonable price because some festival was going on, so we went back and the guy was all belligerent and wouldn't give us the room! What a F*cktron.

Last night's Klogic: I was at Bennigan's with Derek and ordered the clubhouse sandwich. A few minutes the watress returns and tells me 'sorry, clubhouse sandawichie sold out'. WTF? How do you sell out of clubhouse sandwiches? What ingredient could a huge western chain restaurant possibly be missing that they couldn't make a sandwich that any buzzing sign or greasy spoon dinner in North America could whip together in five minutes?

Has anyone else ever been to a restaurant that was 'sold out' of clubhouse sandwiches or is this another Korean first?
