My co teacher just dropped the bomb that my VP is coming round to school with the contract to sign up for another year as today is the last day in my province for the admin to get the paper work into the education office. I figured this wouldn't be happening for a couple of months as i don't finish till may and am a bit shocked at how quickly they are asking me to make a decision (i.e, about 2 hours).
I said i would re sign for another 200 000 a month, i don't know if they will offer it to me, they should do as i think i'm worth it, all my open classes have gotten really good reviews, i teach most classes alone without a co teacher and have a pretty good rapport with the kids.
I have to weigh up the pro's and cons of course, it's quite annoying to be rushed into making this decision.
It's like how tim from "the ofice" put it when he was thinking of quitting his job, " right now i'm about a 3, i could roll the dice and score a 6, or i could roll the dice and score a 1".
I'm thinking of flipping for it as it's quite evenly weighted. |

Don't forget about vacation time. You didn't mention it in your post, but you could always negotiate for more time off in lieu of a salary increase.
Good luck. |

If that's what the job is worth, then stick to it. If they offer to give it to you, sign. If they balk, tell them to come back in 4 months. Then END the "negotiations".
If they're going to rush you into a decision 5 months early, then they can rush into a pay raise. |

I agree with the others, and on top of that, I think someone is full of sh!t. Four months to process the paperwork? Nonsense. It would set a very uncomfortable precedent in Korea for someone to be that organized. |

More like five months away. How riidiculous. The VP probably just has last year's contract with the dates changed and no mention of W200,000 / month more.
Just tell them not to worry and there's plenty of time. If I'm correct they can't process it at immigration until 30 days before expiration, at any rate. |

The education department has a deadline for some reason. It's not the school themselves, it's the local office of education that require the paperwork to be done by today. |

They (city office of education) probably have to submit the budget and plan to the province for funding for next calendar year. |

You could try just giving them a 'letter of intent' instead. The contract cannot be processed until a month before it expires so what's the point in signing it now? |

Five months before your contract expiry is way way too early to decide. And only given two hours to decide leave the teachers no room for negotiation.
If I were you I would say screw it unless they offer you very attractive reason(s) to renew your contract at this time. |

It might be tricky to re-negotiate your contract with a public school-- a lot of them will come up with excuses like...
-we can't offer you that because of school board policy
-we'll have to get approval from Superintendent So-and-So
-we'd like to but we don't have the budget
-we'd like to but it would set a dangerous precedent for other schools (I've actually heard this one)
What it comes down to is whether you've got something they really want-- if you can play ball with them (convince them you're saving them the cost of a recruiter, wrangle some vacation time in lieu of raise, etc.,) this is going to be a tricky process.
Let us know how it goes! |

My VP delayed the meeting till tomorrow. If they agree to a 200 000 raise i would stay, otherwise i'm out. |

I really doubt that this requirement came from the education office. The requiremet probably came out of VP's ass.
Asked for 300K more and settle for 200K. Who knows, they might actually give you 300K. |

I think so too. I was asked one month before my contract was due to expire if I wanted to stay at my current public school job.

That wasn't the "contract" of intent or anything? |
