Just wondering if anyone would like to share camp ideas? I've got a one week middle school camp for two or three hours each day.
First class I'll probably split them into a couple of teams, make teams names and team posters. Establish a sticker point system for teams. Certain amounts of points can be exchanged for prizes at the end of camp.
Some sort of ice breaker activity...not sure about this yet. Got any good ice breakers?
In the last hour I was thinking we would do some sort of winter craft activity.
Other days:
I don't know for sure yet. Wanna fill in the blanks for me?
-Super Hero Project- It's a project from Mes-English. Students design, draw and write about a superhero they make. I'll show them some superheros that middle school students in Japan made along with pictures of the students. If they're interested, I can put their superhero and picture on the website for other students to see.
I'll use it as a chance for them to do presentations also.
-Scavenger Hunt- Teams get a list of things they must find. Several things I'll hide around the school. Somethings they'll have to ask other teachers in English for.
-Video Day- Pretty self explanatory
-Music- I'll probably bring my guitar and play them some songs. If they seem interested then I'll teach them some pretty simple English songs that we can sing and play together.
-Board Games- Guess Who, Scrabble, Big-town, and other games.
-White board pictionary- two teams, one student chooses a card and has to draw the picture. team members have to guess it within a short time limit.
I need a few more things. |

I have found for the last part of any camp, a spelling bee is great.
I like to split kids into two groups at the beginning of a camp. then i split them into four teams.
so group A has two teams (they come up with their own names), and group B has two teams.
the kids LOVE the idea of competing agianst each other.
so for the last acitivty i do a spelling bee.
Group A against group B. I end with ONE champion speller, and one winning group.
I encourage the kids to come up with cheers for their teams and their groups. |

You can change it by having them spell in teams. Example apple: S1 a S2 p S3 p S4 l S5 e. A student that misses a letter is out. The team that has one member left is the winner.
On another day, You could do a day of short activities all strung together and call it the "English Olympics". Write down as many words as you can think of that starts with B. How many words can you make from a long word. etc...
|
my winter camps are basically just getting the students to use English, conversation and such, it's really open.
I really like the 2 ideas you have here.
What else can be added for the "English Olympics"?
that could be the camp final day or something. |

I'm creating an English Olympics for my 2 week English Camp.
First week is just more roleplaying and such and the week after thats when I will have the Opening ceremony and closing ceremony.
So far what I have is the spelling bee that was mentioned, Gambling, Family Feud, Wheel of Fortune, Price is right, word search competition, lots of relay races and such. |

Have you thought of Poetry writing? I am doing Haiku and Acrostic poetry this camp. Haiku is good for stress and syllabication practicce, both are good for exploring descriptive language, adjectives, ect.
ACROSTIC POETRY - spell a word virtically example S N O W F L A K E,
W I N T E R - the phase, word, etc. begins with the first letter S - Snow falling softly, Night time glowing, Outside is shimmering, With gentle, Falling, Light, And we toss it up in the air, Knowing, Everything is coming back in Spring.
Both should be focused on the theme - not 'helter skelter' stuff.
Provide a few examples. Use contruction paper, colored pens, and have them present.
Or I am also doing snowflakes (science and art) - I printed up 2 pages of info regarding basic weather vocab, snowflake formation and searched for templates - included several examples and students have to follow directions - fold in 1/2; fold again, cut the dark colored parts, open slowly.
I know you have done this 100 times in school but these kids usually have not.
Provide constuction paper, scissors, glue, glitter, colored crayons, write a card inside.
I have 40 minutes with a different class for each day. Kids love it.
If weather is good (snowy and sunny) take them out for snow angels, snowball fights, etc followed by hot chocolate with marshmallows - or get some small, portable cookers and roast marshmallows outdoors. Remember to tell them to dress warmly the day before. |

First day:
Divide the students into teams, get them to make a team name and poster about their team. During your camp, award points for attendance, task completion etc. make sure there is a good prize at the end of it.

I let my kids design a DVD cover about the movie they see. Which they really enjoy doing. Also pick a movie with a song and learn the song from the movie. My 2nd grade boys are watching Stand by Me, 1st graders are doing Neverending story. Both have songs involved.
Also cooking day. Even if it is just making pudding, they love to cook. This time I'm making boiled chocolate cookies Ditch the nuts and half the amount of sugar and the kids will love them (also because it's winter you can just leave the cookies outside to set. What ever you make, make sure they don't eat their food until after they've made their recipe card!!!
For comparatives and superlatives, you can get them to design advertisements about a certain product. I use computers as they love it. Give each team a 'spec sheet' which has sentences they can make sentences about their own product with.
Other themes - 'English around the world' get them to find out information about other English speaking countries. Perhaps bring in some food or pictures to describe a country. Which tie into your English Olympics idea well. |

Yeah, I'm having a bit of trouble planning my camps too. Granted, I did a camp in the summer for my school, but a lot more kids signed up than actually came. Plus, the camps at my school are only about an hour and a half, which seems rather short to me.
I did things like Jeopardy, Speed Charades, Mad Libs, a role-play called "A Crazy Story" (can't take credit for this...much thanks to Creating Stories With Children by Andrew Wright), and Wheel of Fortune.
At my school (sorry...forgot to mention that it was public elementary, and I teach grades 3 to 6), the majority of students are very low levels of speaking. They are better with writing and reading though.
Any feedback is appreciated!! |

My clamp activity...get this...Hapkido. 1.5 hours a day of tumbling, play fighting (some serious stuff) and nun-chuks.
How's that for fun? I'll make a band of 무사 and run around the English building attacking everyone on site.
Me: It's the art club...get them.
My kids: Argggggg |

i have 10 days of winter camp
if I start it off as conversations and such first and than end it with the English Olympics for the 2nd week would that be okay? or would it be better if it was all English Olympics? |

This sounds like a really good idea! Did you find templates and such? |

This has been the most useful thread I've read at this site. Granted, I spent half my previous time following a debate between Creationsists and reasonable people, so maybe this isn't so impressive. |
