|
|
Hey everyone. I need some advice. Here is my situation.
My contract is up the third week of March. I now work at a public school. So getting another job at a public school will probably near impossible because of the timing. (Or is it?!) If I could quit 3 weeks earlier I would be set, but than I would loose my bonus/return flight money.
So, I could get a job at a Hagwan, or anywhere else I can get, which isn't so bad. The only problem is I have to go back to Canada in September for my brother's wedding. ARGG! I couldn't be happier for him but the timing is not the best.
So, If I get another job in April I will probably have to quit half way through and fly myself home... and my visa wont get canceld until a year later. Or try to get a job and ask for the time off in advance... (is that possible?)
Should I just try to stay around and teach privates on a visitor visa until September, until my brothers wedding? This is illegal so I dont feel comfotable doing it. Or is it possible to get a 4 month Visa at a temporary job? Anyone here ever do that?
I want to come back to Korea after my brother's wedding so I dont want to screw myself over and not be able to get a job becasue of a visa that hasnt expired. Anyone got some advice?
Other possible options:
--Go home to Canada now until the wedding (6 months of waiting) Then come back. Find a shitty temporary job. Live with mom and dad (kill me now)
--Go travel for a while in asia (I still end up waiting a long time, 6 months, and spend money while doing it)
--Try to get a temporary job in China. How bad could it be?
--Get a cruise line job for 3 months (has anyone here ever done that?)
--Stay at my job and ask for vacation during my brother's wedding ( I know they would give me a week). I'm just tired of working so far outside of the city. Don't want to be trapped out here for another year.
But I really want to keep making money in Korea and not waste a bunch of time wandering around. Yes, I want to travel but not for that long.
Any advice from seasoned vets? |

Just tell you next job before you sign that you need a week or two off for a wedding. It happens all the time. |

I forgot to add some information. I also want to go back teaching at a public school somehow after that year. So signing another year will mean I end at the same time again. Which sucks. |

I'd try the China option. I have seen 6 month contracts offered there.

How about extend your current job until the end of summer camp (August).
Return home for the wedding in Sept.
Head for the beach in the Philippines until Jan 0f 2008. Unlike Thailand you can extend your stay for up to 1 year.
Return and start back in a public school job at the start of the new term in the spring of '08.
You don't lose your severance, you can go to the wedding and are only on vacation for 5 months or so (Oct-Feb).
5 months on the beach in the philippines or in southeast Asia is pretty cheap. You can get by on a couple hundred dollars a month, live pretty comfortably for $500 per month and live like a king on $1000. |

I wanted to extend it but they wanted me to stay the whole year. I have no idea why. They offered to keep me another year but wouldn't accept half a year. Crazy |

You consistently give the best advice on this board. I nominate you for the Time: Dave's ESL Cafe 'Person of the Year' award. |

Not crazy. They have to worry about the 1 year housing contract and securing funding for the native instructor. |

What about quitting a few weeks early to get a new public school job? My visa actually expires at the end of February due to a mistake on their part. I would be loosing my bonus and flight miney though 3 weeks before the end! UGGGG! Is it worth it to get ack into another good public school? |
