Hi,

I'm looking to work in a Public Middle School in Yeosu. As suggested by a lot of other people here I asked to get an email listing or contact from former or current teachers to see how the working conditions would be. They told me that there were no other foreign teachers and they couldn't give me their contact info. That sounds fishy to be me but considering there are not other foreign teachers, does that sound right? Does anyone know anything about the Public School in Yeosu? Could use some input, thank you!

public school jobs seem all the same. You're the only foreigner, your co-teachers might speak some English, though you will find them to be unhelpful in most mattres 90% of the time.

Other than that, its not a bad experience. I'm enjoying my school so far

Is that one of the schools with the 900,000 Won deposit in their contract? If so, that kind of sets the stage as to how you are thought of.

If I were you, I'd tell them to remove that clause before I even considered working there.

No, they didn't ask me to send some money.

By how hard is it to get help from other teachers if they don't speak English very well. What do you do with behavior issues, or just find out about school policy. Is it all laid out in English before you arrive at the school?

No, I didn't mean that.

Look at the contract under Housing or Indemnity and see if it says they will take 300,000 Won out of your salary for the first 3 months for a deposit.

If it is there, don't even think about signing until they remove it.

has a discussion that will be of interest to you if you are deciding whether or not to accept a housing deposit.

Thanks, I'll keep an eye out on that as well. There was not mention of that in my contract though.

Some of my coteachers are great in the mattress! Twisted Evil

Seriously though, it depends on your school. Some public school coteachers are horrible, unhelpful or nosey. Other public school coteachers want to help you whenever possible because they feel fortunate to have you at their school. You can't really know this, though, unless you talk to a former teacher.

Second, about the housing deposit, 300,000 is not that much money in the long run, and you will probably get it back. It is to make sure if you destroy your place or do a runner, the school will be able to pay for the bills you left unpaid. If you see a contract, and it is there, don't fret it. Most people I know get their money back. If you are worried about it and don't think you will get it, don't pay your final bills.

Third, most contracts at public school will have an English translation, at least the ones I have seen, and if not, just get it translated.

Its 900 000 if you work for GEPIK. No big deal really as you get it back at the end of your contract anyway.

IF you get it back.

It just amazes me why people would sign a contract with a clause like that. There is no justification for an almost $1,000 USD deposit.

You claim you're 99% sure you will get it back, but how do you know? You are almost completely at their mercy.

As long as people like you agree to these unreasonable demands, nothing will ever change.

900 000 Won?!? That is insane. Just think about that for a second. Now give it another thought and just think about it again. That is just plain wrong. There is no justification whatsoever for paying that out of your paychecks. None whatsoever. I too work for GEPIK and I didn't have to pay them anything, not a single won.

Teachers PLEASE DO NOT ACCEPT SUCH STUPID AND UNREASONABLE conditions.

What happens if you have an emergency that forces you to leave the country before six months? Will you see that money? I can understand 300,000 Won - still unreasonable imho - but 900,000 Won is crazy.

You take each of these cases on their merits, these are public schools not hagwons. I have no doubts i will get it back. & months into my contract and nothing that has happened to date would lead me to believe otherwise.

Sody, it doesn't matter to me either way, this is a very good school and a good job so the mior inconvenience that it was to deposit the money out of my first 3 paychecks is nothing compared to how i have been treated and how (to date) this contract has gone for me.

Oh yeah...they also spent a LOT of money fitting out my apartment will all new things i need, including a new computer that would have set them back at leats 2 mill after my asking for one.
