Hi. On the last day of my winter camp with my high school students, we will have a prize ceremony.

My principal said I can have about 30,000 Won budget to buy prizes...

The class will be about 15- 20 students, aged (Korean age) 17-19.

I need prizes varying in value as we'll be doing english Olympics and other activities where teams can win points.

So if there's say five teams, then I'll need five sets of prizes (one per team member) varying in value.

I'm stuck for ideas... I want them to be somehow related to English...

One idea is - a book. But what book??? Haven't they all read Harry Potter already... Roald Dahl short stories... No, no way over the budget.... classics are cheaper but too complicated....

See - this is difficult... Confused

Dictionaries no good, they all have those computerized ones already....

PLEASE HELP!!!!!!!! I'm rubbish at this sort of thing....!!!!! Confused

Your suggestions very much appreciated.... Cool

Cheers!

P.S I'm not american, so wont be buying things that specifically relate to American culture, I know that would be an easy option (american candies, foods, posters etc) but would feel weird... Hmm, could find some Cadbury's stuff in the dept store though...

What else.... ???[/b]

The only things that high school students got genuinely excited about when I offered them prizes of varying nature were: pizzas and movie tickets. W5,000 culture coupons are a possibility, too.

There are some pizza stores around that don't cost a fortune. For example, a Pizza Etang branch near us does 2 large pizzas for 7,000 with free coke. However, I don't think your 30,000 will go far. Can you push it to 50,000?

I second the movie/etc voucher thing - that's what my school mostly gives and they are well recieved.

For my last camp I gave 'Face Shop' stuff as prizes - face masks and vouchers - but I teach only girls.

Thanks, I really apreciate the voucher ideas.

That might be an option I will check out.

Anyone got any more ideas, that are a bit less expensive...

cheers all...

Why don't you just ask the cheap arse for a bit more money instead of tying yourself in a knot trying to find something in his price range.

I don't think 5,000 won per student is too much to ask.

Cool

Go to the 1000won store and find some cool stuff there.
Daiso has 1000, 2000, 3000won stuff so maybe you can get some okay things there.
I was in Ecostore (another 1000won store chain) last night and picked up a couple of neat toys - including one of those small wooden animal toys with the elastic inside the joints.
Also, you can personalise things by buying CDs and cases, and burning your own music selection and making a cover sheet to go in the case.

Man, that one I REALLY like. Only problem is I don't quite know if my students would appreciate the music I have with me.

Mostly, Leonard Cohen, Nick Cave, The Smiths, Pearl Jam...

You get the picture...

Could do same with movies, but then, movies are only W1,000 from dvd store anyway and I don't have a dvd burner...

I like the idea of the W1,000 stores, but my principal said I have to make a list of the things I want first and give it to the school treasurer...

Darn it, I'm going there now and just asking for the money. I'll say I'll provide receipts....

Anyways, cheerscheerscheers for all the ideas peeps and keep 'em rolling...

Cool

What I did was took a selection of different styles of music that I liked and also more pop-py songs I thought my students (at the time 2nd grade middle school girls) would like. I know that Koreans have access to most American pop music, so I chose music I knew they would not know - it was all stuff from my home country of NZ!

Tell him you will go out and buy the stuff and get receipts (ask him for the name of the special receipt you may need). Then the school will reimburse you.

OR if you want to buy anything as prizes from the school's stationery store supplier, you can ask teacher if you can go there and then the store will put charge the school...

I know what you're saying but I only have the type of stuff I mentioned with me. I'd kill myself out of shame if I played pop songs at home... only kidding, but you get the picture....
