as I know that I do not have to pay anything anyway. At least I do not pay until I clear that $79,000 (American dollars - the real ones - not those psudo Canadian or Aussie "dollars") per year in income.

I refuse to pay taxes on money that wasn't even made in my country, especially if, technically, moving overseas as a resident alien constitutes me being unable to vote.

I've heard that the CDN gov't has a deal with Korea and they can check to see how much you made- so if you lie you are in real trouble... is that true?

USA! USA! USA!

I love tax time here. Just fill in that EZ form and be done with it. No screwing around with deductions, no giving over huge portions of my income. I just can't stay home for more than 30 days.

No forms required.
You allready pay your taxes on each pay.
The only reason you would have to pay taxes would be if you have investments that are generating income.
If those are in Korea then you will have to pay tax on it, if they are in canada, no matter your non-resident status you will have to pay tax on that income, not your Korean income.

many schools do the taxes for you... but you should make sure to submit your medical and car insurance receipts for deductions

fully agree.... you must file for non-residence status to be tax exempt in Canada.

however, any taxes paid in Korea are deductible if you file in Canada. not filing is just asking for future trouble, but that trouble is with you and Canada Revenue... getting non residence status is easy... i was refused once because i owned property... so i sold the house and voila... i became a non resident after the second application...

How about this. I never filed for being a non-resident now, but I can do so later when I get back. In any case, my status now I believe is non-resident even though I didn't fill out any form or submit it to anyone. If the government wants my money, they'll really have to try hard to get it!! Twisted Evil

Exactly. And one of the benefits of filing your US taxes is that you keep your residency status. Just use a family members address. You can use a schedule "c" and counteract your income with the expenses you incurred to earn it, and you could even contribute to an IRA , if you show a profit in that year. Turbo Tax will do everything for you. There is a code for this industry. ( education )
