Man am I sick of this line of thought that Korea is NOT advanced! Earlier this year I was doing a class for the teachers in the school and they kept feeding me this load of garbage: "Korea should not have FTA with America because we are not advanced country".
This might be the mother of ALL inferiority complexes.
- Highest rate of internet connectivity in the world
- One of the world's foremost technology and auto manufacturers
- One of the most developed countries in the world
- one of the most advanced public transportation systems in the world (Seoul)
- routinely scores in top 5 of international academic testing.
But are they advanced???
HELL NO!!!! |

I mostly agree with this. I'm not sure it's all inferiority complex, but that is probably some of it. One part is the knowledge that if they accept developed status, they lose certain privileges that give them the excuse not to reform. |

Yata is right. There are many benefits in being a developing nation. Koreans just repeat (gasp!) the crap their state tells them to be true. |

Recently saw several news items in Google news, that per capita, Korea was actually beating the USA, for the number of Uni graduates in 2005/6. No inferiority in education whatsover.
The reason? High cost of fees in the US. Gone are the days of working part time at MacDonalds to pay off a Uni degree. Prices have jumped beyond the reach of working class Americans.
And just last week the Korean President Roh Mun Hyun was in Australia, lining up mutual FTA's. Also read that the standard of living of South Korea was on a par with Portugal. |

(Funny, I was just talking about this with a friend a couple hours ago...)
Ever notice how many cassette tapes are still on the market here? Kinda anachronistic for such an "advanced" society...
And personally, I'd like to see some heating / AC to the subway stations before I start calling Korea truly "advanced". Hell, I'd settle for seeing 50% of the taxi drivers learn how to correctly adjust their own heaters & AC's to a consistent, moderate temp rather than full blast furnace / full ice-storm.
Technologically advanced? Perhaps. "Advanced" in terms of common sense and collective social maturity? Well... |

And lowest intelligent use of that connectivity. I have seen exactly five people in PC bangs doing something other than games or chatting. Literally.
Me: How many hours do you use the internet a day? Three. (Average.)
What do you do? Play computer game.
Anything else? Search news.
What kind? Entertainment.
How much do you use it for research or homework? 30 min.
A day? A week.

I'd like to see that quantified between knowledge and application. Ask your students to write for you.
Don't disagre with you, but I'd choose my examples a little more carefully. |

Unless you spend a lot of time in PC bangs you can not really draw conclusions as to what the majority of people are doing. |

The Hammer's Roadmap for Korea's Development.
Step 1
Develop a proper garbage collection system.
Step 2
Develop the desire in the population not to litter.
Step 3
Develop the ability in children to look both ways when crossing the street.
Step 4
Develop proper zoning laws. Apartments and smokestack factories do not go together.
Step 5
Develop codes that require sidewalks to be smooth and stair steps to be of the same height.
These 5 simple steps will allow Korea to make great strides towards becoming a developed nation.

Well said Hammer. That was a very 'Hammerish-like' pronouncement.
You forgot
Step 6
Develop the ability of delivery boys to notice pedestrians when they mount the pavement/sidewalk with their mopeds/scooters. |

True piling up the garbage bags on the street looks rather tacky, but as for littering, quite frankly, I NEVER see littering in Korea (and I do occassionally leave the house).
Regarding Step 5, the stairs at my place are incredibly steep.
Cheers.
OK. Well after making this post I went out to do some errands, and, of course, paid closer attention than usual to my environment to test the littering theory.
With that focus I did notice a little littering. About 90% of it was cigarette butts. Given the great dearth of public waste disposal cans, I'm surprised there isn't a lot more.
Someone who's been in Korea a long time told me that they used to have a lot of them about 10 years ago, but that lots of Koreans would bring all of the their household trash to the public ones to avoid paying the small fee that is charged for garbage pickup. I have no idea if this anecdote is true or not. |

You're an idiot. Thanks for proving it once again. The logical fallacies of your falatial attempt are obvious, but you being of minimal intelligence is enough. Just to play along: haven't been in a PC bang since last December but for twice when I was inconveniently far from home. Given a number of years in Korea, however, over two decades, one sees a lot. Quizzing one's students on their habits provides yet another set of statistics (but that was clear from my post, punk/child/enfant terrible/idiot/ignoramus <--- reader choose as suits your mood, or add your own.)
Sadly, the majority of Koreans use the internet for almost anything but intellectual stimulation. So be it. It does not indict their nose-to-the-grindstone rigor during their J.H. and H.S. years, nor any number of other positive traits. However, this falatial post by you is typically moronic. |

Do you even read what you wrote?
I wouldn't be calling any other posts "moronic" if I were you. How about typing something that makes sense and doesn't make my eyes bleed?
To provide just one example: What is "falatial"? You mentioned it twice so I assume you know what it means. |
