I'm going to be doing the trans-Pacific flight and I'll have a five-hour layover in Japan, so whatever I take will have to be acceptable there. I know Japan is picky about things like cough medicines and such.

xanax always works for me. see if a doctor will give you a couple for the ride. i've stopped in narita countless times and they've never said a thing, much less checked my bags.

I tried Valium...didn't work, but no one checked my backpack at security. I think as long as you're not bringing huge dosed of stuff, anything you bring will be ok.
