At the Yangjae Costco the other day, I happened to pick up a kids' book on 유관순.

The name was not familiar to me, but I recognized the face instantly. Her image has long been associated in my mind with that of 안중근, since they are both icons of Korean patriotism, and as such tend to be trotted out at anti-Japan demonstrations.

Anyway, what I now know is that she lived from 1902 to 1920, and was thus only 17 or 18 years old when she died, in Seodaemun prison, as a heroine of the Korean independence movement. Seemingly, though, she did little more than hand-make Taegeukgi flags by night and distribute them by day, before being caught by the Japanese.

Wikipedia doesn't have a named article on her. She seems not to be very well known outside Korea.

Any interest out there?

Is she the one whose statue stands near the Shilla on Namsan?

That's cool. It seems the flag thing is so small but she paid a big price. What guts she must have had.

Do you know how she died? I know back then the Japanese wanted every dissenter sentenced to death, but flag-making hardly sounds like a capital crime.

Notice how she appears to have been given more aesthetically pleasing features in her portrait at the site linked above?
