|
|
Hi,
We'll be off to Ko Pha-Ngan on Saturday and although we have some ideas about what to do with our time, it would be nice to hear about other peoples experiences on the island.
Also Ko Samui as we''ll probably do a day trip there too.
Any hints or tips?
Cheers. |

I used to live on Koh Samui for a few months. There are tons of secluded beaches between Chaweng and Lamai. Just explore around until you find somewhere you like.
There are also tons of secluded beaches on Koh Phangan. Stayed on one in the northeast side of the island last Christmas --- gorgeous. |

Get a scooter and drive out to the fishing villages along the east coast. As you go north, the beaches get better and better. At the Northeast corner, there is a sand bar beach that leads out to an island. The sand bar disappears at hight tide, but if you can get out to that island, there is a great restaurant.
On the Northesast and east sides, there lots of dirt roads into the jungle with cool secluded waterfalls.
Get a map and a scooter... or a dirt bike of you can operate one... and explore. |

Tong Nai Pan is a good place to visit.
It's up on the North-East section of the island.
Rent a bike in Had Rin. But be careful! |

That's where we stayed. Beautiful. But I'd advise against renting a scooter. I don't think there's anyplace more dangerous to ride one than Koh Phangan. |

If you do head to Ton Nai Pan, be sure to stock up at 7-11 first on drinks and snacks. All the bungalow resorts charge a heavy price once you get there, because it's a 40 minute ride to Haad Rin. 100 baht for oreos, 3 baht/minute for internet, and 150 baht for a 120 baht phone card. Ridiculous. We even stopped eating at the resaurant there because it was too expensive. We found a noodle stand just up the road that served better food. Have a blast! |

I've driven that road on bikes when it was both dry and wet. You don't want to get stuck on these hills when the road is wet - especially if you don't have the right kind of bike or skills.
They grate the roads making them pretty smooth. But then it rains and the road grooves up and forming some pretty deep ruts.
One day, a couple of years ago during the rainy season, I was on my way up to Tong Nai Pan by bike and saw 3 German guys trying to make it up one of the hills. The hills were really rutted and greasy.
I parked my bike, took out a can of beer from my pack and enjoyed a good 15 minutes or so of comedy! They were slip sliding all over the place. Finally, unable to climb the hill, they turned around and went back to Had Rin.
I also took the bike into Bottle Beach but I don't recommend taking a bike in. The roads are really steep and rutted out. Nice beach though. |

The road from Thong Sala (sp???) to Had Rin was pretty good if I recall. The road to Ton Nai Pan looked like the pictures a couple of years ago. I loved that beach but that ride now is just a little too much for me.
Pha Ngan the prices are still cheap compared to Samui and we love Samui. Just got a quote from a place on Chaweng we've been staying at for years 1500 baht/nite OUCH!!! 3 years ago it was 1000 baht, throw in a weak dollar and it is almost as expensive as the hotel in the states I got for the next 2 weeks. |

Here's a loader smoothing out the road. Notice the deep ruts on the bottom right-hand side of the photo.
Some more heavy machinery grooming the road to Ton Nai Pan. When it's smoothed out, it's pretty good for riding. The bike trip takes about 40 minutes or so when the conditions are right
This section of the road is now cemented. The concrete has chipped away in spots and there are holes in the road.
This is the bike I made the trip on. Perfect size for handling the bumps and rutted roads.
Bottle Beach is pretty nice. But the road is rough in most sections.
Tong Nai Pan Beach.
