Homeplus, of Tesco fame send their wine buyers out over the world purchasing decent plonk in bulk and bottle it under their own label. Been enjoying their Tesco South Eastern Australian White for six months now, and its only 4500 won a bottle. Beats the tar out of the over-priced Hardy's and Linderman's (goon-makers extrordinaire) crap. Share any wine recommendations you may have here.

Hyundai Department Store in Miasamgeori has most of their wine on sale. No need to drink crappy Carlo Rossi.

in a pinch i go to the 7-11 near me. they sell "yellow tail" which is totally decent and affordable-- around 14000 won. the shiraz is better than the merlot in my opinion though i usually prefer the latter. there's a wine store near my school and they have an excellent kendall jackson, but it's about 3x more than the yellow tail. i'm on the lookout for vendage (california) or concha y toro (chile)-- which i highly recommend.

personally, i would rather never drink wine again than drink a drop of carlo rossi.

I like "Gato Negro" for red wine. I like wines from Chile. I usually just buy whatever is on sale at LotteMart. The 7-11 like store in my building also sells sparking wine (which I call champagne, even though it's not from France) for 2,900. So, I've grown to like that.

Gato Negro is always a good bang for your buck. I used to buy it back in Aus from time to time. How much does it usually sell for over here?

I'm mainly a red wine drinker. I've had to sort of scale down the quality since being here since it's so damn expensive here:) Generally, I think wines from Chile, Argentina, and Spain are tend to be a less ridiculously priced than ones from France, USA, and Italy. With Aussie wines, it's hit or miss as far as price as I've seen significant price differences from one store to the next.

But here are some of my recommendations for decent, (somewhat) affordable reds:

Alamos Malbec - around W18,000-W20,000
Argento Malbec - around mid W10,0000
Carmen - either Merlot or Cab - around mid W20,000
Penfolds Rawson's Retreat Merlot - around low to high W20,000 depending on vintage

Just my two cents worth Smile

The Hardy's CabSav in a box from Costco is certainly quaffable and reasonably priced at about 35,000 for 5 litres.

(Apprxox equiv 5,500 per bottle).

Am currently enjoying a 2002 Graves, Chateau la Rocaille. have no idea what it cost. It was a service at my local wine store for buying a case of the next wine listed. If anybody knows the cost, I'd be interested in learning. it's really nice.

Will get into a Isla Negra Cab Sauv from Chile next. Very drinkable at 11,000 a bottle.

Ruffino Chianti 2004
Frontera Merlot and Cab Sav 2004

Both are quite nice. I buy it by the case (12 bottles) from a friend that owns a restaurant, so the prices are more than reasonable 16,000 and 8,000 per bottle (192,000 and 96,000 per case) respectively.

Oigirl...Carlo Rossi? That stuff is toxic! That's like saying Boone's is wine? Dang, you can see homeless bums drinking that stuff in the states. Real wine isn't sold in foil bags.

Check your palate.
