I just discovered that I have Thursday and Friday (Dec. 28 & 29) off in addition to January 1! I've never been to Japan, so I was thinking about doing a leisurely weekend and take the ferry from Busan to Fukuoka.

But being that this is short notice, I really haven't had a lot of time to really plan out a trip. Is Fukuoka a place that is easy to "wing it" in? As in, can I just get on the ferry, show up, and just take it from there with no plans or hotel reservations? I don't know any Japanese, so I don't know the ease with which I will be able to get around and do things.

And I'll basically have from Thursday-Monday to do whatever, is that too much time to spend in Fukuoka? Is there something else in that general area I should try to get to?

You may know of this already-- but check out Kangsan Travel online or in Haeundae, Busan. They have a 190,000 cheapie package with ferry and hotel, and you can simply add on for more days. It will be much cheaper than arranging a hotel in Fukuoka, although you can certainly do it.

Not an expert on Fukuoka. It will be chilly. But there are likely hot springs nearby, and the city has pretty scenery, ancient fortresses, and lots of shopping malls to see.

Fukuoka Tower, Canal City, Sofukuji Temple, & the nearby Tochoji temple boasts Japans. largest wooden sitting Buddha.

I'd also try to include Nagasaki Peace Memorial Museum, if you have time. Not that far by bullet train.

It's possible to walk all the way underground from Hakata Station to Tochoji if the cold, rain or snow are bothering you. Or use the local subway if 1 km is too far to walk.

Ps: Japanese keyboards were a pain to use. The @, ,. keys were all over the place.
