Ok, so I've been here a few days and it's nothing close to what I expected. The weather is not so great (everyone saying it's very uncommon for this time of year) and the water is brown everywhere I've been, including Lamai and Chewang.
I've thought about going to Ko Phangan, but people are saying it might be the same since it's so close.
Is anyone in Phangan that could give me a field report? Or should I just go to Phuket/Ko Phi Phi?
If anyone has advice I'd appreciate it!

If you're that close, you might as well check out Phangan.. why the hell not? Most likely conditions will be similar... but the last thing you want to do is head towards Phuket and wonder what could have been...
Just go there.. put your mind at ease... things could clear up by tomorrow... |

samui is a bit over-rated in my opinion.
thailand has a rather complicated rainy season and it can quickly turn otherwise crystal-clear blue water into a muddy mess.
samui sucks anyway for snorkel/diving.
ko tao is a short boat ride from there and has some of the better snorkelling in the gulf of siam.
otherwise, ko phi phi is supposed to be the best. |

| I just came back from Ko Samui and was not impressed as well. There are way better beaches in Thailand. Now is not the time of year to be on the Gulf of Thailand....go to the Andaman Sea ...the weather is great this time of the year. It doesn't take long to get there from Suratthani by bus. Personally, I like Koh Lanta or Railey near Krabi....beautiful beaches and crystal clear water. I don't know what all the Samui hype is about. |

Samui:
Rainy Season: October - March
Dry & Very Hot Season: April - May
Dry Season: June - September
However, even in rainy season I've experienced great weather in Ko Samui and Ko Pha Ngan. So right now, it's actually Samui's 'rainy' season.
You might want to jump over to Phuket as it's the "dry" season on the Andaman side at the moment.
Phuket:
Dry Season: December - April
Rainy Season: May - November

Looks like December isn't so good... however.. Apparently January has the most sunny hours... and ranks 3rd best month for less rain, with only Feb and March ahead of it. So, I say pack up and head to Samui!
Also, note that if the forecast calls for rain, or thundershowers, you can pretty much expect clear sunny skies. I know that sounds insane, but when I was in Phuket, the forecast kept saying "thunderstorms" the whole time I was there, yet all I saw was clear, sunny, beautiful weather. I have no idea what was wrong with those forecasts during my 1 week stay. |
