|
|
I work in the Yongin Province.
My supervisor (who is a LIAR) says to me,
besides doing the winter camp, I have special classes
in the afternoon. He has calculated that to (teachingtime)
(40 x 30 classes= 20 hours)
But those in GEPIK know that during the school year any
classes beyond 22 are entitled to overtime. He says no, its
just part of Kyungido instructions to do 80 hours during camp.
Overtime is not included.
Just wondering if ANYONE has the same issues. |

You cannot be paid for doing over 22 hours. You can get paid extra for extra classes, but that's it.
Previously my recruiter(worknplay)told the school I would work 23 hours a week and wouldn't want overtime.
I referred them to the contract and now they just keep it to the SIGNED AND AGREED TO 22 hours.
Tell him to get bent and refer him to your contract.22 classes max.End of discussion. |

That doesn't sound right. Each lesson is considered a contract hour in the public school system. I don't know all the details of your situation, of course, but I would just say 'no more than 22' if I were you. |

Sounds like rubbish to me. Is there a special clause in your contract regarding hours for camps? If not then I don't see how he can make you work all those hours without extra pay.
Maybe the labour board could clarify things for you. Their number is 1350, press 7 for English.

Can't really tell what you are being paid overtime for in your post, but:
--ALL winter classes are overtime, I don't care what they call it. From the time your school has "vacation" to the day you start up again the next term--is vacation, and all classes taught in this window are overtime. If they call them special classes, super classes, camp, advanced wintertime class, english theatre class, whatever--it's all overtime.
I'm not in Epik or Gepik, but in Yongin, public HS. You can use this to your advantage--threaten to quit, as Yongin schools have a b*tch of a time finding people willing to work there, so chances are they will bend over backwards to make you happy once you draw your line. |

And another thing,
My supervisor says -he's doing a favor to give me
3 weeks vacation time.
The usual -is one week-.
Is that good? Or is he just a slimy eel trying to look good
as a supervisor? |

OK, your posts aren't very coherent, but i'll give it a shot--3 is more normal for Public HS winter vacation, about the same in summer. Plus a lot of time off for testing days, sports day, etc. 1 week off per half year is normal for hagwons.
I think you are in a Hagwon if you think 1 week of vacation is "the usual." |

the standard in EPIK is one week per vacation (summer and winter) but many people are becoming very frustrated about EPIK, and i dont know how long they will be recruiting people. i guess dummies will keep signing with them, but they keep making their contracts worse and worse.
one class is one hour, doesnt matter if the class is 40 minutes, 45 minutes, or 50 minutes.
someone posted all vacation classes are paid, that really depends on your contract. some contracts specify you get that time off, some specify that you must work unpaid during vacation. some do not address the issue and it depends on how you and your school negotiate it.
just remember, you hold the power. how easy would it be for you to find another job? what does your school offer you that others cannot? if they are not giving a ton of vacation, or arent paying you for vacation classes, or dont have some awesome coteachers... they can be replaced. can they replace you? i doubt it will be as easy as you getting another job. |

If you are part of GEPIK, then your contract should state that you are to work no more than two weeks of winter/summer camps AND that you are to work no more than 20 hours per week.
It also likely says that you are not to be paid extra for camps, which is reasonable considering the contract as a whole. You are, after all, only offered two weeks paid holiday per year.
But your contract and mine may not be identical - I am teaching with GEPIK and that is what mine stipulates. Email wenise, she's very good |

Ouch. What does the G/EPIK contracts say? I'm privately hired by my HS, and my contract says I can be offered to teach the win/sum breaks, but the choice is mine. I take it of course--it's essentially double pay or more. |

My GEPIK contract doesn't stipulate the 2 week limit. It does mention the 20 hour per week issue..but there's no limit to the weeks mentioned. Seems like there's some slight variations even among the same organization's contracts. |

I will just add this: I am glad I don't work in a public school.
I remember so many people telling me around mid 2005 that public schools are the way to go and hagwons are for idiots.
The tables seem to have been turned. |

Not really. I am in a hagwon, and I stay another year over here, there is a strong chance I will not work for a hagwon. The current hagwon is fine so far, but I would get more vacation time with a public school and less problems with the monkey business done by some. |

No, no I don't think that's the case. I spent a year and a half at a hogwan in '01/02. It was pretty good as far as hogwans go and I have friends who have gone back and are still there now. this year I'm in a public school and I will never go back.
I wouldn't go as far as to say hogwans are for idiots, but the quality of life I have now doesn't even compare to what I was enduring then. First and foremost is the fact that I don't answer to a director/owner and second is the fact that the school spent 20 million won on a new classroom for me.
That said, this is Korea...the only certainty is that you're rolling dice coming in the first place. |
