Ahhhhh, at last. I'm finally 'authorized' for the board.
Great!
I'm in the process of doing my homework assignments to apply for an ESL position somewhere in Korea, but........!
The 'where' that I work in Korea is going to be at least partially determined by where I think I'll have the best chance of (a) finding an existing salsa dancing community and/or (b) the likelyhood of me being able to find some Koreans who'd like to learn.
Matter of fact, I like to salsa so much that I'd even teach some Koreans, in English, to salsa for free if they wanted to. Any chance of that ya' think?
It doesn't make a lot of difference what style it is but I prefer, 'on 1', casino rueda(Cuban style), bachata and bachata rueda. Matter of fact, if I can, I'd like to start a casino rueda team .....just for fun.
Does anybody know if, or where, the salsa dancing goes on in Korea? I'd really like to know.
Thanks,
Art

You'll find it in Seoul. Not sure about other cities. |

There's a Salsa class at Club Caliente in Itaewon. I think it's free and Thursday nights...not sure if the day is right. |

Just so you're aware; if you seem to get a lot of giggles from Koreans when discussing this, it's because the pronunciation of 'salsa' is very similar to the Korean word for diarrhoea. |

Thanks for the warning about the Korean meaning of the word. That's funny.
I do have another question though:
Do Koreans like to dance?
I was wondering if teaching, in English, some of my Korean acquaintances how to salsa dance (or cha-cha or bachata or whatever) would be a good way to build friendships.
Thanks,

Salsa clubs are everywhere, all the rage with the Koreans nowadays. Just arrived in 2006 apparently, and I'll go out on a limb and say they have worse rhythm than even the white folk...so they will beg you to be an instructor. |

Thanks for the great info re: salsa. I pretty well assumed it was over there, somewhere, because I read about Edie, the Salsa Freak going over there for a Congresso and she said she thought the level of dancers was good.
Of course, I"m sure she'd be at least somewhat complimentary to her hosts. I suspect she was talking about the hard core salseros and salseras who attended the congresso.
I did another post and asked about what the air in Seoul was like....thinking that if the only place they did salsa dancing was in Seoul that I'd probably try to get a teaching position 'in Seoul'.
But from what I was told, the air in the Seoul (Seoul itself) area isn't always so great but the air on the outlying cities is OK. I also have been reading that it's pretty easy to commute into Seoul from some of those outlying cities.
So it sounds like what I need to do is try to get a teaching job slightly outside of Seoul and just 'come in' when I want to go dancing....assuming there's no salsa dancing where I live.
Thanks for the great info. |
