My boss let me know a few weeks ago that the school will be closing in a few weeks (I have reason to believe this isn't true, but that's another issue). After several difficult negotiations during which he insulted me for being "pushy" "difficult" & "scary" (!), we agreed that he would provide me with:
1. a letter of reference.
2) a letter of release.
3) a plane ticket home
I've only been at school 4 months. Frustratingly, he was extremely stubborn about agreeing to the ticket home, saying he's not obliged since I didn't work there for 12 months (!) & there's still no proof he's putting his $ where his mouth is.
He won't give me any of the letters until the last day of my employment at the school, which isn't for another 2 months. I said that I insist he buy the ticket now & send me the itinerary. He said, "I tried but the rates aren't fixed for March yet, so all I can do is make a reservation." Is this BS? It's the only 1 of the 3 I really care about since I'm not staying in Korea-- have a job lined up elsewhere.
I'm furious. Tempted to just walk but I'm in need of the cash that I would earn from 2 more mos. employment. Advice? Thank you. |

Check your contract. Mine states that the school has to provide a plane ticket back if the school closes for unforeseeable reasons. |

He may be trying to play you brother. They try to play us foreigners sometimes. He needs to give you that release letter ASAP if he is going to close. I am not sure what you should do exactly, but I want to know if you have any Korean friends. You may or may not have to go the Labour Board. At least, you can consult them and get advice because the person is full of B.S. I smell a rat. At least, that is my opinion having dealt with one shady boss. If the school actually closes as far as I know you wouldn't need a release letter unless he is not closing it. I am not sure exactly what you should do, but you are entitled to a ticket home. |

Sorry to hear that.
The plane ticket thing is not BS - Korean travel agents/airlines don't know their rates until like a month before departure and sometimes later.
I'd push for that letter of release asap, though, in case you want to find another job. |

I would have to say yes. Go online and you can find a number of flights for March. Print many up and show them to your boss. Everyday. Tell him to pick one. Give him daily deadlines, and when he fails to produce a ticket, keep bugging him. Also, make sure it's in your name. |

TRY to get the letter of release. If you can find a REASONABLE person at immigration, you may not need it to change schools- just TRY to explain the situation.
The rest? expect to get screw-d. File with labor, NOW. |

I agree with Wylies. Protect your a*se. I got away without a release letter because my school actually did close. However, you are not sure in this case. How many students does your boss have? Count them.
Cut back on your spending asap and build some reserves. |

thanks everyone for your replies!
no, my contract does not state that school is obliged to pay ticket home in case of unforseen closure : ( [i never would have thought to ask for that!!! he campaigned so vigorously to get me to come here! never would have thought the place might be on the verge of shutting down....]
can you say more about how to file with labor? would he find out if i did that? |
