i am returning to new zealand soon and i am trying to decide to a) send my whole computer home, b) to take it it to bits and get a new case back home or c) pack my whole desktop into my suitcase.

By chance does any one know how much it would cost to send a desktop to New Zealand

If i go with the second or third option what would be the best way to transport the components/desktop, how do i protect them in transport, and how easy is is to strip down a computer

Cheers

i took a computer to canada. i just put the tower in a box and carried it on the plane. since it was smaller than the size allowed for carry on, it was okay. i put it under the seat because of the weight.

the lcd monitor was carefully packed in a suitcase wrapped in clothes.

hope that helps.

I once took a desktop to israel and stuffed it into a camp trunk, wrapped it in bubble wrap.

Made it intact no damage to it.

If you have the space and can carry it I would say take the whole cpu.

Maybe you can carry it on the plane with you and stick it in the overhead.

Pick up a computer box from your nearest computer shop or any place that sells towers. It should have the styrofoam packing material with it and they are designed for shipping. Worst case is that some of the cards may come loose during shipping but they are easy to re-seat anyway.

You can carry it with you as luggage/carry-on or ship it. Shipping may cost almost as much as a replacement computer if it is low/medium end or more than a year old.

If you want to strip it down, excluding the case and powersupply, it will fit in a box not much bigger than a mobo box.

If you are careful you can strip it down in about 15 minutes. If you do not have anti-static bags it may be worth the 10-20k to have your local computer shop do it for you. They can also package the components for travel in your luggage.

Im heading home soon and have the same problem. Im debating to ship it or carry it on the plane. Bondrock, did you have any problems getting it on as carry-on. I just measured the box and it is ok for carry on size on air canada, so i guess i will try it that way, at least it will be cheaper....
