YouTube is being blocked in schools in Jeollanam-do. Some people can still access the site from their homes. And it's still accessible via sites like stupidcensorship.com, etc.

Just thought I'd share.

edit: It's one of many sites being blocked by a Jeollanam-do filter. I'm not sure if it applies only to schools, or what.

Are you sure about this? Is this ALL schools or just what you've heard from some folks that you know and their computers? When the govt orders ISPs to ban access to sites, they don't/can't segregate IPs to that level of specifics. The Ministry of Information and Communication orders ISPs to ban access to sites regularly and that's done as a blanket ban. Same goes with China. I'd say that if it is being blocked at some schools, that the school might have installed a surfwatch program or something to prevent people surfing porn, etc, and may have added YouTube to the mix.

The internet cafe in my building has site blocking software that blocks relatively harmless sites like Myspace.com & Youtube.com.

So annoying!

I switched to another internet cafe and they don't have that annoying software (or maybe they have another kind).

The funny thing is that software is not effective. Sometimes while surfing, I still have pop-ups from porn sites. Very Happy

Some schools have software installed that prevents it. I don't know why since youtube doesn't have any porn on it (believe me, I've looked).

Well it's back up and running now, at least at my school. I had one of my coworkers call the education office, and they said it was mistakenly blocked. This type of thing happens frequently. For a while myspace wasn't accessible, and today I haven't been able to get to geocities.com.

Poktanju: I wasn't gossip-mongering, and the ban wasn't just for schools, but since many of us use youtube in our lessons it seemed particularly relevant for teachers. As I said in the OP, I was just passing the information along.

I work at a pub school in gyeonggi do and they have all kinds of stuff blocked, ESPN, Youtube, google.com, epicurious. I had some comp issues a while back and the school board comp technician came by and he looked at it and wrinkled his face and was confused as hell. He then wanted to see what else was blocked, and he was able to access multiple online gambling sites, porn and a couple of other things. Youtube, google.com (.ca and .co.kr etc all work, just not .com) are still blocked, though I'm demanding they unblock youtube so I can teach a class on advertizing.
