Alright then, I finally thought I had made progress with this whole working in korea bit, BUT

got my letter of acceptance, contract, and information sheet today
Info sheet says to apply for visa you need : copy of signed contract, notice of appointment, visa app. fee, passport-sized photos

Called the consulate in Vancouver to confirm with them as info sheet seemed to be lacking some items (Passport?):

korean consulate wrote:

Please see the following documents;
E-2 Visa for teaching foreign languages in Korea
The requird documents to obtain a visa for teaching foreing languages in Korea for more than 90days are:
1. Completed visa application form(www.mofat.go.kr/vancouver-> English-> visa)
2. One recent passport-type color photo
3. Passport with remaining validity of at least 6months
4. Employment contract
5. Certificate of Company Registration form
6. Original Degree
7. Sealed transcript
8. (신원보증서)
9.Cdn $65.00 visa fee [cash or money order(Korean Consulate)]

Well then, sealed transcripts; Can't get em until Jan. 2nd since school is closed

Original degree; Oops! sent that over to Korea

Lady tells me im SOL, but that I can send them a "letter of permission" so that they can contact my school and confirm with them if I am indeed a degree holder.

I don't know about anyone else's schools but mine is quite anal with giving out private information

Also, has anyone ever been asked to send in their f****** original degree to get an E2?

I am so frustrated, and can only imagine this is the start of the infamous Korean bureaucracy

PS: It's a public school gig
PPS: I am supposed to leave Jan.11th!

Not in the U.S. Just passport, application with the visa issuance number, and photo. Of course, the money!

Almost sounds like they want you to obtain the issuance number, not just the visa.

Crazy!

Contact the school and see what they want to do; asap!

I needed at the Toronto consulate:

My visa confirmation number
Passport
Passport photos
Fee
Fill out some form at the consulate
Either my original degree/sealed transcripts

It seems at the Japanese consulates that you don't need the last item. I dunno they must make up some rules locally.

You can get the transcripts and then have enough time to get the visa. Although they may also claim it will take the greater part of the week.

NEVER GIVE ANYONE YOUR DEGREE EXCEPT IMMIGRATION OR THE KOREAN CONSULATE.

They lost mine and had it replaced recently. It's a major pain in the ass.

Most businesses' in the U.S. will check references, education, past jobs, criminal history, etc....so it's no big thing for koreans to want to do the same. Only someone with something to hide would squak. A person applying for a teaching position in the U.S. will surly jump through some hoops before being offerd a position! I'm sure the same in Canada and elsewhere.
