I've received a sample contract from a school that wants me to front the plane ticket. They say they'll reimburse me after I get to Korea and present them with an invoice. Is this the standard agreement? It seems like I'd be assuming a lot of risk by paying for the plane ticket myself.
Also, do most schools deduct 100,000 won from each paycheck until a 300,000 won security deposit on your housing is accumulated? Shouldn't they just pay that upfront? |

Say no to both!
If they refuse then simply look elsewhere
Good luck! |

Definitely say no to the plane ticket. But my last school took 200,000 won each check until a 600,000 won deposit was met. They did refund all of the deposit when I completed the contract though. |

Maybe so, but it is still an illegal clause!
Quote from Alabamaman in the contract posting thread states:
"Ask the employer to remove the deposit! The employer is entering a penalty into the labor contract if he/she doesn't comply with your request.
Article 27 (Prohibition of Predetermination of Nonobservance)
An employer shall not enter into any contract by which a penalty or indemnity for possible damages incurred from nonobservance of a labor contract is predetermined."
Good luck! |

I wonder why they would put those things in the contract to begin with? Both of those items are aimed at limiting the risk that the school is exposed to. The first is to limit the risk of instructor flight from the school, and the second is to limit the risk of instructor flight from the apartment without paying utilities. Why would they be worried that the instructor would leave without paying these items?
If they won't take them out, then it is probably better to find someplace else to work. Have you checked out what their foriegn teachers have to say about the school?
Have you considered looking at other schools? I can't see any good reason why you should be sharing financial risk with any school like this. If this is a hogwan then there are plenty of hogwans that will pay the airfare for you, even small ones.
If they want you to pay the airfare upfront and you are OK with doing that, then why sign the contract with that school before leaving? It would be far better for you to fly to Korea and check out several schools before signing a contract |
