Yep, that's the new title. 'Dynamic Korea' was good, but yet not quite dynamic enough for such a land. 'Hub of Asia' nicely signified Korea's cultural, economic and technological domination of the continent, but it left out a certain spiritual dimension. Not to worry, the newest motto catches spiritual brilliance perfectly. Korea is now the Soul of Asia. A large sign in central soul says so.
I can't wait for the next installment. "Korea: Light of the world." |

Based on the CNN article discussed earlier, how about "Korea: Red light of the world"? |

I just read on the BBC site today, speaking of red light district of the world, that 1 million people are engaged in it. That seems very, very, very excessive. I mean if the population of the country is 40 million, and there are say 19 million women than one out of 19 women are involved?
Well, I am sure some of them have to be from other countries, so let us say maybe 1 out of 20. That is quite excessive.
As far as the soul of Asia, I disagree with that. China is kind of the mother of East Asia. So depending on what you mean by soul, a lot of spirituality in Korea came through China. However, in Asia, I would say India probably has more soul, I am guessing. |

Republic Of Prostitution
The Korean Institute of Criminology released figures on Thursday stating that prostitution is a W24 trillion business in Korea, accounting for 4.1% of the countrys GDP. The figures serve as a warning as to how prostitution is no longer something that can be seen as an individual's moral corruption.

SEX WORK IN SOUTH KOREA
However, according to surveys by civic organizations, there are over 300,000 establishments related to prostitution, in which the sale of sex takes a diversity of forms. 1.2 million women are believed to be involved in these establishments. This number constitutes 20 percent of all Korean women between the ages of 15-29....

Ha...do you LIVE in the Same Korea that I do? Cause the one I live in has at least 3 or 4 massge parlors on every block. |

I live in the same Korea. Sometimes, I feel like I am in the twilight zone, but, for the record, I like many things about the place.
When I lived in Cheonan, I saw many, many, many of those place with barber shop poles. I have seen less of it in Ilsan. It is kind of interesting to think that many girls you might be sitting near in a PC bang work in the love business. It is interesting to see the definition of conservative connected with rigidity and a lack of a desire to change.
So even though prostitution is common, it is not necessarily a strange deviation from society in some sense except for some of the Born Again Christian types.
I can't think of another country that keeps having slogans all the time.
Montreal had a slogan for some years "Montreal c'est toi ma ville", but it lasted for some years, at least. It would appear Korea is trying to garner so much attention with these slogans.
From a business stand point, they need to fix the bureaucratic system, have more transparency, more English speakers in the various government offices (there are some) such as immigration. For example, few Koreans immigrate to Korea, and they would be Koreans from Central Asia, Russia, and Japan. Most are from other countries.
Also, having contracts as a suggestion in the face of foreigners is foolish. Many of these foreigners have relatives in business. It would make some weary of doing business in the country. These things are more important slogans. |
