If you live in the Seoul/Guri area, what color are your garbage bags supposed to be for the three separate trash streams: kitchen waste, recycling, and general trash. I know that this has been asked before, but I can't find it. Are they supposed to be special bags or will any bag of the appropriate color do? Where do you find these special bags? I couldn't find any at the JJmart. |

i can't stand the garbage bag system here. you can even get fined if you don't use the appropriate bag. what a dumb-assed idea this system is.
put all your garbage in a black bag. then put that black bag in the pink garbage bag. why? whhhhyyy? (i know the answer: government taxes). maybe if the population learned the real definition of "double bag", they'd stem the STD problem.
i take my chances. i leave all the recycling in one bag for the garbage-vultering-ajummas to sift through (which they will anyway). i secretly deposit my garbage in a black bag at night, when the garbage-buzzards are sleeping soundly. |

I don't live in Seoul, but I still haven't figured out the garbage system. I usually take my trash out in the middle of the night, so nobody knows I'm the one screwing up the garbage rules, although they probably have their suspicions! |

Yellow bags are food
White bags are trash
Recycling you can stick in any bag or box and just set it curb side. Usually they wont last more then 10 minutes regardless.
Oh and you can usually get them at your local mart, they normally keep them behind the register. |

I've only seen them out for sale a couple of times. Usually they are behind the counter, and you have to ask for them specifically. I don't know the real word for them, so I just say 쓰레기 봉지 and they always understand.
Also, I got fined like 300,000 won last year for not separating the garbage (since no one had bothered to tell me about it). Turns out, there was a camera perched above the garbage area, and that's how I got caught. Btw, boss paid the bill. But anyway that's what can happen. |

All your biomass waste should go in the yellow bags, cans/paper/plastics go in whatever container ya have handy and tossed out, everything else goes in the white bags.
I think theoretically they use the biomass as fertilizer or something. For those that dont know, building a trash dump in Korea gets a stronger NIMBY response then building a nuke reactor back in the states. |

By `yellow', do you actually mean orange? My bags are orange and white--just bought them (thank-you Q). |

Hmm.. they should be green. From what I've been told, the colors for separated garbage vary from area to area. So it will not be the same from one city to the next. As for the standard, non-recyclable/too-lazy-to-separate garbage, though, that should always go in a green bag, afaik.
I just checked my bag, and it says 쓰레기 봉투 in big letters across the top. Does your bag say that? |

Yellow in my city/gu, so I think it's completely variable.
Although I don't have any other bags...food garbage goes into a common bin, although some houses, not apartments, in this city have their own individual containters that you have to buy a sticker for monthly. Recyclables are sorted into common bins in the apartment garbage area. |
