I have a dog that I need to put up for adoption if anyone is interested.

He's a street-mutt that I got off the American military base. He's part Dachshund, part terrier, and who knows what else.

He's about 11lbs (5kilos). A year and a half old. Really cute in a hairy kind of way. He is absolutely adorable. He really wants someone to love on, and follows me around everywhere. He never chews on anything that isn't "his", and he is friendly (but a little cautious) with strangers and children. He wants so badly to be obedient, and listens very carefully to the tone of my voice...

Until we got outside, at which point he turns in to the little hunting dog that he is and completely forgets he ever knew me. He's oblivious to my calls. He must be kept on a leash.

The reasons I'm getting rid of him are:

1. He barks at the smallest noise. He won't stop barking until I've got him down on his back, pinned, with his face to mine. I know I could get his vocal cords removed, but that's expensive and I can't afford it. And it's kind of cruel IMHO.

2. He licks himself. He gets up on my bed while I'm sleeping and won't stop "cleaning" his equipment. Then he wants to lick me. It turns my stomach. And it really freaks me out when he's "happy" to see me when I get home. I *know* it's completely natural, but I've never had a male dog before. I'm decidedly going to get female dogs in the future.

3. It really pisses me off when he goes in to "hound" mode and doesn't give a damn that I'm calling. Sure I could get a longer leash, but even on the leash I hate going for a "sniff" instead of a walk. Constant pulling, whimpering, jerking. I've had him a week and it's a chore to take him outside.

If you can stand those three things, he's the perfect little dog.

Email or call me if you're interested in pics.

Ask around. I am sure there are plenty of ajoshis who wouldn't mind taking this pet off your hands.

Mmmmm... Uh, how much does he weigh? 5 kilo... Is he a thick, meaty looking dog, or is he a bit lean and stringy looking? If the latter, do you think you could fatten him up a bit for me over the next couple weeks before I come pick him up? My FIL's birthday is coming up.

looks to me like at an abortive attempt at a rescue. noble intentions with problematic results. maybe you need to shut up until you learn 100% of the story.

Aren't you the girl who was itching to get onto the base to get a dog?
Now you have one and it is not what you expected , so you want to get rid of it?

Poor dog.

Instead of throwing it out like a broken toy have you though about buying a book about dog behaviour and retraining methods.

It's not that hard. It just requires time, patience and love. Plus, if you REALLY wanted a dog you'd make the time.

Didn't you post a while back that you were searching for a dog? Now, you've got a dog and you want to get rid of it because it acts like a dog? Unbelievable, really. But, truly, I do hope you find a good home for the poor thing. I'm sure someone will be in the market.

I'm not certain, but I think you can return the dog to the base.

Ilovebdt's suggestion is right on. First, you have to willing to spend the time to learn how to train the dog, and then start training. Throwing the dog down on it's back with your face in his, is a good way to teach him that the behavior he was doing is rewarded by your attention!

Dogs need to be on a leash for walks. For their safety, if nothing else. It will take time to train him to accept the leash. Later, you can take the leash off to play fetch or whatever; in an area that is safe.

All dogs clean and lick themselves! Male or female.

Barking control is the most difficult but can be done. Remember, this dog came from a place where other dogs were restrained in kennels. Do you remember how they all barked? One barks -- they all bark.

Before you get another animal, you need to assess your own needs and ask yourself if you really want the responsibility involved.

If you only want to get rid of it because of behaviour problems, I will GAYRUNTEE that wee bit o research and training the dog owner will go a LOOOOONG way.

I'd take him but we got two dogs, one of whom is a puppy who has been( but seems to have stopped) crapping on our bed...soooooo, no thanks.

Hey, if you want to keep him it will take 10 mins to train him to answer your calls.

All you need is a pocket of SNACKS and a WHISTLE.

1. Put him on long lead, blow the whistle and when he comes give him a snack. (If he is as bright as you say he will pick this up quickly)

2. Just like in class. Repeat, repeat, repeat

3. Let him off the lead.

4. When he dashes about 25 - 30 metres blow the whistle and give snack with praise a plenty.

5. 50 metres

6. 100 metres

7. Any distance you like. He will always run back for a quick snack.

Dog trained!

Can't help with the other problems except to advise you lob his gonads off! I shuddered just typing that Laughing

That will give him a shock when he goes to lick them next time!! Will probably calm him down and ease the barking too! Ormake the barking squeeky Shocked

Yea. I was itching to get on the base and adopt rather than encourage the puppy mills here.

And no, I can't "train" him to answer my calls. I've done fairly advance dog training from puppies to adult dogs... Obedience, Agility, Assistance work... and anyone who has ever owned a hound/terrier will understand that coming when called *only* works when there isn't a small animal to chase. I didn't think he was a terrier/hound when I got him, he looks like a million other dogs I see wondering the streets here. The ONLY way around that is to use high-voltage shock collars. I'm not willing to do that to a dog.

And no I didn't get a dog for Xmas and now it's a broken toy... I've been trying to get a dog for about 3 months and I had really hoped that this little guy would work out.

Rather than just ignoring him, I'm *trying* to find him a better home that will work out. Not *every* dog is good for *every* person. And this one isn't a good match.

Anyway I'm going to hang on to him for a few more days before trying to return him to the base. I don't want to take him back to the cage I got him out of, but if no one else wants him, I'm going to take him back for another chance at adoption.

Taking that dog back would be heartless. Absolutely unforgivable.

And, I do know how you feel, because I have a completely retarded dog, who is much worse than the one you describe. But she's mine and I love her. I would never cast her away because I wanted a better one. When people ask me why I don't put her down, I say that she teaches me patience.

You can't take that dog back to a cage. You have to find a good owner if you're not willing to live up to your obligation. He's your responsibility now. It's not his fault that you had higher expectations.

Normally, I'm not such a bitch, so I apologize for being so harsh; I realize you are trying to find a new owner, but there is no reason you can't keep him in the meantime.
