I have been here for a while...i have asked old hogwon teachers about it and got no answer....but it still baffles me. Im thinking Koreans do alot of things only because theyare like lemmings...just following the crowd. But why on God's green earth would someone take the time out to put their name on a 20cent pen?
Am i right in that they just do it because the teacher before them did it? What is your opinion on this...im damn curious to find out.
on that note happy new year folks...

That is interesting. I have not seen that done yet. Is it just at your hagwon or have u seen it at others? I get a laugh at how everyone parks rear-end first at E-mart and Homeplus! |

The intention is to be used like a business card perhaps? But I've also noticed that many younger students write their names on their pens and pencils so that they don't lose them. |

Most of our office staff have their names on their pens/pencils. Guess it's 'cause they can say "Hey! That's my pen!" |

This is a good example of the lemming-like behavior another poster mentioned. When I got my first car here in '98, no one backed into parking spaces. It was only around '03 (I think) that the craze hit. Now no one thinks twice about stopping traffic both ways while they struggle to back into a narrow confined space so they won't have to back out into a broad open space later. |

That's right, it isn't just little kids who do it, though I think all Koreans learn to do it at school. And they put their names on all kinds of office supplies, not only pens & pencils. I've seen people's names on rulers, staplers, pencil holders, even taped on one blade of a pair of scissors. Oh, and of course every little notebook and pocket dictionary HAS to have the owner's name proudly displayed somewhere. I've seen them do it, it's like a little ritual when they first join a company and get assigned to a desk or cubicle. Bing, bing, bing, bing -- the labelling frenzy. |

It reminds me of Gareth Keating from the UK tv show "The Office". Where he tipexed his name on his stapler. Were living in a country with a bunch of Gareth Keating....deputy assistant manager! |

yeah... you know what, though? I don't have my name on my stuff, and it gets stolen all the time. At my first school it was so bad that I started writing my name on *everything*, and suddenly I stopped losing stuff. |
