What are your favorite excuses that your students told you for not doing their homework? My favorite is from an 8-year-old boy (who wasn't too bright by the way) who said,

"Teacher. Uh... we don't have paper at home." Shocked

I got this one years and years ago when I was teaching high school in the US.

I asked for the students to hand in their essays and one girl timidly raised her hand, tears in her eyes..."Mr. Ya-ta, I can't hand it in today. My parents put new carpet in yesterday and my book got nailed under the rug. I'll bring it tomorrow."

It was true.

From a university student:

"Teacher, I didn't do the assignment last week because I had an abortion." The she handed me her hospital bill, and a fully-translated English copy, so I knew she wasn't lying.

Too Much Information. Next time, just say you were in the hospital, thanks.

a whole class didn't come. tracked them down.
Their excuse: "We thought you had gone home to your country."
Me: "But I taught half of you for (a different class) 2 hours ago!"
Them: "oh yeah?!"

I bought it first time, when she tried it again I hauled her off to the manager.

Mine when I was in elementary school: My dad threw my homework in the garbage.

Of course the teacher didn't believe me so I asked her to call my dad at his office. So my dad, English professor and chairman of the school board, had to admit that yes, he had thrown his son's homework into the garbage.

i had a student tell me he didn't show up for class the week before because he had been arrested for fighting. i thought that was going to be the coolest one on here, but it doesn't even compare to abortions and married middle-schoolers.

Something's got to be wrong there. I'm pretty sure 19 is the legal age for marriage.

Don't know about marriage (...but then how did they explain Moon Geun-young getting married at such a yound age in "Little Bride"... I never watched the shite, I'm asking...)

Let's not forget the "excuses" (justifications) advanced for soliciting a better grade. I've just heard the most compelling reason yet to reconsider a 4th year university student's mediocre score:

"I'm not good at English and that's why I had a bad grade."

Um... Okay, he had me dead to rights there.
