Air Canada has announced that in 2007 they're going to upgrade every seat in their fleet to include seat-back touch-screen video & game selections. The upgrade will include power outlets for laptops, etc, PLUS USB-type connectors for recharging iPods and BlackBerrys.

The stars of the $300-million project are touch-screen panels on seatbacks. Passengers will use their fingers to press options displayed on the screens, then sit back and enjoy beefed-up video and audio entertainment, said Montie Brewer, Air Canada's president and chief executive officer.

"Every seat on every aircraft will be replaced," Mr. Brewer said in a year-end interview.

Quote:
Montreal-based Air Canada expects to have two-thirds of its fleet of 200 aircraft refurbished by summer, with the makeover project scheduled for completion by the end of 2007. The entire cabin will get a facelift, including the introduction of lie-flat seats in business class on overseas flights. So far, in a preliminary phase, 14 planes have had their interiors finished and are now in service.

Another feature on Air Canada's seatback screens will be interactive games such as puzzles and card games. There will also be three-prong plugs for laptops, and USB ports to recharge iPods and BlackBerry devices.

Well done, Air Canada. Now, how about giving the passengers some food on their cross-Canada flights again?

I was on an AC flight with the video screens, and while mine worked intermittently, *many* of the screens did not work at ALL.

I hope that their new video screens will be better than the ones that they already have Very Happy

Of course, I would take a flight with fabulous service and no seatback videos over a typical AC flight with the fancy shit any day.

you know, I'd actually pay MORE money to fly on an airline that doesn't offer food. On a twelve-hour flight over a big ocean, a meal is nice, but anything less and I'd really rather sleep or listen to my music or read than be interrupted and constantly offered drinks or crap food that I don't even want. If it's a longer flight I'll buy some chocolate or something at the airport.

It isn't cheap to fly even a few hours. You'd think a half-decent meal would be part of the deal. Maybe it's wise to bring a sandwich or something.

What looks like a $5 meal to us costs the airlines $25 to put on our tray table. We all want the cheapest flights from Toronto to Vancouver. Something has to go.

That's the problem with touch-screen displays. They break easily and even when they are in excellent working order, almost all of them bubble. Though the console looks cleaner with a touch screen, many manufacturers consider a touch-screen to be too touch-and-go to bother with them. It's better to stick with something that you know won't be coming back for warranty service. You would think that the techies at Air-Canada would think about this issue in light of the thousands of people who will be fiddling with their version of in-flight distraction each year. You can bet that the cheap barstuds won't be delaying a flight to fix those suckers when they break!

Why not reduce the cabin sound or make things smell better. I don't really care about movies which are months old or crap games. If I wanted those I would get a PMP or a Nintendo DS. Seriously who are they fooling by adding CSI re-reruns and Blockbuster DVD bargin bin movies.
