Yeah...you got it. That is exactly what has been asked of me. How'd this happen? A professor at my univ. rang me earlier in the day to ask if I'd look over his wife's paper destined for a conference this SATURDAY (and needs it in under 24 hours). Begrudgingly....

Me: How many pages?
Him: About 20
Me: Ok, I'll try...send it now for me to look it over.
Him: It is not done yet.
Me: Shocked ...ok, send over what you have...
Him: Great idea.

~~~~~~~~~
Seven hours later and just past 10 pm...it arrives. A 60-page "dissertation" that "is supposed" to be destined for a peer-reviewed academic journal (what journal prints 60 pages?!). Well, 10 pages is devoted to charts and graphs....so not that bad Twisted Evil Whose doctoral dissertation is a mere 60 pages...I know it is quality over quantity, but.....
Rolling Eyes
So, I get a ring telling me that the docs have been sent and a request is made...."please don't sleep tonight and complete the proofreading by tomorrow night..."
<<<wishes there was an emoticon that properly shows a sane person's facial expression>>>
Ahhhh, welcome back to Korea...
!shoosh,
Ryst
Of course, you're getting paid a lot (directly or indirectly) for this? Wink
How much are you getting for that? He said, "Don't sleep"? Why are you getting it now?
What are you getting? 1 million?
I told them for academic papers...20,000 (for a cake job)~50,000 (for well, FUBAR-ish).
Overnight BS...ohhh, man...they've done handed over their life savings...
Why now? I have NO clue as to why she is JUST finishing this!
I get this sort of thing from grad students and profs all the time. I have a fee scale I use.
1-2pg 25,000won
3-5pg 30,000 won
5-10pg 60,000 won
10+ special price (I take into account graphs and how well it is written)
I tell them this is the 72 hour price. If they want it in 48 hours add 5,000/pg. In 24 hours or less add 10,000/pg.
I'm on of the few foreigners who will proofread so I get several requests each year. Although I don't usually charge this much as the papers are often well written, but they do give it to me early.
I worked at the same uni for 5 years. I used to do them for free, as a porfessional courtesy. Now I know why the other foreign teachers were so p1ssed off with me.
Not exactly what I'd call it.......
40+ pages of wonderful prose (well, you'd think it was that)
10+ pages of charts (ok, piece of cake)
couple pages of references (APA-esque...man, what a joy!)
Icing on the cake...semi-constant phone calls asking when it is going to be finished/why is it NOT finished alllllllll dayyyyy looooooonnnnng.
All complete and resembling something to be published in a western peer-reviewed journal. I will now imbibe our Lord's gift....
I'm kind of wondering why this guy's wife needs to write something in English.
What use is it? What use is she?
I'd be straight out with him. 60 pages of highly technical material and short time lines, the best you can do is correct problems with articles and punctuation. And stick to that.
If he won't accept that, then forward him 4 pages of questions for his wife to answer.
"When she writes x, what does she mean? I'm having trouble with this."
