I've found Korean motorcyclists are very good. I think I became a much more aware driver then I was back home because I have an "autobike" here.

There are rules they are just not enforced.

Is speeding through a playground the definition of a good motorcyclist?

nope. none. nada. zilch...

...wait. there's one important rule: at any intersection, regardless of right-of-way, close your eyes and gun the engine.

Watch out for the 18 year old pizza delivery scooter guys. They are reliving their youth!

Strangely, I got over my fear of riding on motorcycles here in Korea.

In the States, the mere thought of riding on a motorcycle scared the everliving poo out of me. It seemed like the quickest way to painful death. But here, I have several friends with motorcycles, and I perversely feel much more safe about riding them here in Korea. I have no idea why. Maybe it's the knowledge that if push comes to shove, we can just drive right the hell on the sidewalk.

And they're broken without much thought by Koreans who just care about themselves - not about someone they might hit with their motorcycles.

Seen plenty of car accidents and not a single Autobike one.. So that has to speak for it self.

I think I've seen twice as many food delivery bikers come a cropper as cars. Your mileage may vary. They usually hit each other when they jump red lights or zip across sidewalks.

Same here. Wrench can't be talking about Seoul. Especially if you include, along with the real-time accidents you may happen to witness, all the white chalk (ok, spray paint) outlines on the streets that you see. I mean, every day you see them if you ride a motorcycle. Different ones & new ones all the time. In car collisions, they'll often just mark where the front & hind tires were. In motorbike crashes, they paint an outline around the whole bike and the body. Sometimes the body outline is some distance away from the bike outline. They look like clouds. And at some of the more notorious intersections in the heart of the city, you see these "clouds" all over. Sometimes they even overlap there's so many. It can feel like driving over an old battlefield.

I see dead people. They don't know they're dead. They're still trying to make that 30-minutes-or-it's-free deadline.

Not trying to be ornary, just remembering.

1997 - summer. Went to a Christmas party at a house. One of the roomates in that house was leaving, so it doubled as a going away party. Nice house, btw. He was a Phd (education) from New York. He used to teach at a hospital (Doctors, their wives & kids) and made a lot of coin doing this. Saved a bunch of cash, was on his way to Russia after Korea to ride his 10 speed across the country. Very smart fella...

He had just gotten out of the hospital after a bad crash on his bike. Don't remember details. He had a beard, was tall...anyone remember him? Seemed to have a lot of friends...

The rules are different here than in the states.
I would never even think of riding a scooter in the states, but here I have a 49cc scoot and if I had another 50 cc's no one would ever be able to catch me. There are no rules, I mean its rather obvious if someone is coming over, just pay attention ( expect everyone out there is trying to kill you) and you'll be fine.

p.s. (I'm the one that just passed you in all black leathers riding the pink scoot at full lean angle)
