|
|
I was wondering if any you could provide any recommendations for a good text geared toward adult conversation. The students are in their early-twenties and just want a "conversation class". The school provided me with a book, but I'm really not too thrilled with it (and most of the students wont be buying it). I'm just going to be using it for discussion question ideas.
I've noticed that my students have a tendancy to respond with bullet point answers, so I'm looking for a book to help teach them how to make their conversation flow more naturally. Sorry about being vauge - I've only taught kindergartens until now and I'm feeling a little over-whelmed. Any ideas or help is appreciated! |

I have conversation classes with middle school students, and it's a nightmare. I hate them...I've had a couple of kids drop the class cause they didnt enjoy it. I have no idea how to teach conversation, but if I can figure it out I can get more students, and some OT I think....
I think these conversation classes are the key to tutoring as well, as this is what it seems korean parents want... |

I teach adult English teachers and use Interchange 3 (Cambridge Press). It's good and it isn't too easy, giving you lots of material to work with.
Use a mix of newspaper articles, discussion questions, video clips, and textbook activities to keep the class interesting. Using only the textbook, any textbook, will get dull for any class.

Will this be a short-term class or long-term? (A couple of months vs a full semester/year vs on-going forever?) Will additional students be allowed to join whenever they sign up for the class, or is it closed to new students?
If it's medium/long-term and a closed class, a book such as Interchange should be fine, but if it's short-term or an open class, a book such as Ugly Koreans, Ugly Americans or a Slangman book would be your best bet as newcomers won't feel left out because they didn't do unit X. Discussion comes more naturally when they're talking about things that they know. |
